Decal woes!
« on: April 15, 2013, 04:12:57 PM »
Has anyone seen this?    I followed the directions to a tee! Metalflake coat wait 5 days, install decals wait 2 days.   I'm thinking painting the stripes would be a hell of lot easier...  They also said dry spray the first coat of clear over the stripes as I did with my airbrush.  Then I waited for flash and covered as I normally do....  It looked great after the first cover coat and second coat .....

Really bumming, such is life.

I will rethink my gameplan in the AM.

Major bummer, wondering what would cause that?  I have a tank at the paint shop now and will be putting stripes on too.

Is that just really bad orange peel? Could it  be buffed?

The vinyl decal wrinkled under the final clear coat
Not orange peal. I can deal with that
I'm think my method for stripe removal right now.

Man what a drag!  It looks like the adhesive in the decal didn't work well with the solvents in the clear. I don't think it would matter how long you waited between applications, since the decal would be exposed to wet clear on the edges when you topcoat. I'm curious what brand the vinyl material was or where you got them (just got into cutting decals for myself with a plotter)?

Looks like a lot of tedious sanding, but maybe once you get through the top coat the decal will just flake right off.

Flake job looks tits, btw.

If it's the vinyl, my guess would be that the solvents in the paint were still off-gassing.   It didn't wrinkle until after the final clear coat ?

Does it have a "plain" clear coat on top of the flake ?   Was it flat before the sticker went on ?   Bummer...

I clear over vinyl all the time with good results.  There are different kinds of adhesive (solvent based, water-based acrylic)

Before you go too far, take a day and cool down.   Stick it out in the sun for a few hours.  It may settle down a bit.  wet sand with a rubber block (800 or 1000) you're just looking to get things flat.  Run water over it to see if you are still seeing those wrinkles.   You may be able to get away with a few more coats of clear with some snading and buffing.

Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

I have found that it wasn't a reaction to the decal. The wrinkle was the clear coat itself. It just happened to wrinkle over the decal. I sanded most of that wrinkle out and recleared, and it wrinkled in another area not related to the decal. I am sure now the activator I used for the clear coat was the wrong temp. I guess that's what happens when you only paint every couple years.  Thanks for the info I think I can save this one.

Okay wrinkles are gone for the most part and I wait a while before sanding further and buffing.

Flake Burnt Orange  ;D  Looks great and will be even better with badges. We need steenkin badges  ;)

01 Fattie? Looks identical to my first one. I could show a picture of it but it's really hard to tell much about it with it upside down under that van.  >:(

Glad it worked out.  Bet it will look even better in the sunshine. Love that color, don't see it very often.
