cb 750k2 with all the bells and whistles
« on: March 26, 2013, 08:32:48 PM »
Hi all.
This is my first restoration so I'm open to all suggestions. I'll give you a little backround on the bike. I'm in central MN and this bike was the window display model in 1972 at Kokish Sports, a motorcycle accessory shop. My friends dad bought it from the owner. It has just over 14,000 miles on it. My friend got it after his dad passed away. I helped him get it running but I kept reminding him that I had dibs if he ever decided to sell it. When he and his wife bought new bikes he sold it to me for $350. The bells and whistles include; custom seat, saddle bags and trunk, fairing, crash bars, chrome engine covers, lowering kit and floor boards with heel toe shift.
The carbs would plug up for my friend and when I got it I checked the tank and saw some rust spots. I coated the inside of the tank but still had the same problem. I set the tank on the workbench ran new gas lines with fuel filters and still the same thing, some grit in the carb bowls that plugs up the jets. So the next step was to remove the carbs and clean them and get new gaskets. That's where I'm at now. While the carbs are off I'm doing some cleaning on the back side of the engine. I want to get it running good before I do a lot of polishing. It did start and run great until a carb would plug up. I do have a new/used set of mufflers to replace the rusty ones.
I'll add more posts and pictures as I progress.

Welcome!  Nice bike.  Do you have any pics of the bike as the display model back in 72?   Great deal for $350, and neat story!  More pics always appreciated. ;)

You need to get that tank cleaned out. Sounds like your lining job probably failed so you may be in for a fight.

It took me a couple cans of paint stripper and a lot of elbow grease with steel wool on a dowel and many rinses to get my old liner out. Then a soak with vinegar for a week will remove any left over rust.

Without a clean tank it will be very hard to have clean carbs. You could run in-line filters but if your tank is really bad it will clog those up in no time as well.

Btw, that's a heck of a bike for $350.

I don't have any pictures from before I owned it. My buddy had the original sales receipt with all the extras listed but lost it just before I bought it.
I think the tank liner is ok the grit in the carb bowls was a fine black color and the liner is gray. I was still getting it after I replaced the lines and added filters so the only thing left was the carbs themselves. Depending on the weather I may get them reinstalled on Monday. I can't wait to get it running again.
In all the bike is in great shape. I want to leave it like it is just work on getting it looking sharp. After I get it running good I want to keep polishing and get it painted. Definitely a new windshield too.

I want to leave it like it is...

Good Call (IMHO). I think it's fun to see some of these bikes decked out just the way they were back in the day. A serious mile-eater for sure.

Time for an update. I finished cleaning the carbs and put new gaskets in them. I bench synced them following some instruction I found on this site. Got the carbs back on with a little struggle. I put the tank on the bench with new gas lines and new fuel filters. Put some gas in and it started right up!! Number 3 cylinder wasn't doing anything so after some troubleshooting I replaced the spark plug and alls well.
Now I need to fine tune the carbs, they it's running a little rough at idle. Any suggestions??

Just gotta love it when that engine roars back to life.
