Clip position

With a CB550 4 into 1 with uni foam filter in airbox what do you guys suggest the carb clip position be?

I have #100 mains and #38 slow... Seems like even though it doesn't make a hesitant sound.... The power comes on like a whooping... Instead of an instant power hit.... Like an initial power followed by a follow up power if that makes sense within a half second.... My airscrews are happy around 1 turn out

I am trying to understand.
What does "The power comes on like a whooping" mean exactly?

Are you saying that the power is not smooth?

I general when a performance exhaust is added to any motorcycle and the air intake system is not altered the jetting and needle position can remain stock.
A "air screw" (mixture screw) adjustment can usually solve any popping sounds on deceleration.

When I ripped the first needle out it was in clip position 4 (4th from the top)... But I'm wondering if a foam filter in the airbox and a 4 into 1 would warrant me changing it back to stock clip position (3rd from the top

OK...Yes, I would move the needle back to the stock position.

IF you have the stock air box with a foam filter it would make very little difference, but that difference should be able to be covered with a adjustment of the mixture screw if there is any popping when you let go of the throttle. Otherwise on deceleration of the engine.

The mixture screw should not be out 3 turns either, it could fall out.
IF you have to turn it out 3 turns then it DOES need to have the slide needle position richened.

When you move the clip on the needle UP it lowers the needle and makes it run leaner.
When you move the clip on the needle DOWN it raises the needle and makes it richer.

You did not tell us what year CB550 you have.
Up to 76 clip position was 4th groove from the top.
On the 77 it was 3rd groove from the top.

What year do you have?????
