I bought a 1976 CB750 off Ebay about a month ago for $500 that has not been running for a few years. Yesterday I put the carbs back in after rebuilding them. New plugs, points and condensers went in today. After a few minor wiring fixes to get some spark I decided to kick it over to see if the bike had any life. To my suprise the bike popped on the 2nd kick and roared to life on the 3rd
I was a little shocked...it seemed to idle pretty well and didn't run to bad. I have not checked the timing yet or tuned the carbs. I'll try and post some pics tomorrow.
So I have a few questions...
It seems to have some noises when running a lower RPMs Cam chain? Clutch? It possibly seemed to quiet down when the clutch lever is pulled in but that may be my imagination. I set the cam chain tension according to the book but I don't know if I trust it. It says to loosen the bolt when the 1 and 4 (I think) valves are closed but it doesn't say intake or exhaust? I'm a little confused on the actually procedure? As an alternative you are supposed to be able to push a rod/wire into the tensioner hole and feel when the chain is set right but I could not get even a small wire into the hole?
What are some other things I should be checking for after bringing an old barn rat back to life? I set the valves, rebuilt the carbs, new plugs and points etc, new battery, replaced reg and rectifier (meeter reads 14.3V at 4000rpm today), put in an ebay wiring harness that seemed solid and cleaned all connectors.
I'm going to try and check the timing and sync the carbs this week and see what it sounds like. Maybe I'm just being paranoid and everything sounds just the way it should.
I'm just giddy that I got it going after only a month
I couldn't resist taking just a little cruise on it so I rode down the alley and back
Thanks for all of the great help!!!! (sorry this was so long...I'm obviously happy)
