Transmission work

Just to verify my assumptions:  to do transmission work, like to deal with worn out dogs, I have to take the head, cylidners, pistons, crankshaft off - basically the whole engine apart, correct?

mostly yes,you can invert the engine and pull the bottom off somewhat on500/550s.

Thank you,  I figured you can't get around the chain from crankshaft to the transmission.

My #2 gear is geting out of control, will need to do something about it.

I never had SOHC engine bottom apart, hence my dumb questions.

someone will chime in here,on 500/550 you can drive the primary shaft through and split the cases leaving the top end intact,im not familiar with the 750.

On your 750 you should be able to service/replace the tranny without taking the top end apart.

If there is a way, I will just pull the engine, flip it over and start taking it apart - and get there eventually.

Take good pictures or make a little diagram of the shift linkage parts behind the sidecover when you disasemble. That was a major head scratcher for me once back in the day before the internet to get it back together   ;)

You can service the transmission without taking the top end apart.  Not the worst thing in the world- you can even do the primary chain while you're there if you don't mind taking the rods apart.  When you split the cases, make sure you keep track of the bearing retainer pieces, as well as the alignment dowel pins.

Make sure the snap-rings are re-assembled in the proper orientation.
