1979 XS750F - Starting up again 7/8/17
« on: March 28, 2013, 05:01:23 PM »
So I started a thread a couple years ago, but am only just now getting serious about completing this bike.  It's a 1979 Yamaha XS750F Triple.  Got it for $300 off a lady who had it sitting in her garage for an untold number of years.

Here's how it sits now....have everything staged (along with my bike frame) to go to the Powder Coater in the morning.

Engine is theoretically in running condition, so I'll just be doing maintenance checks and painting it in the next few weeks.  Picked up a NOS Hooker 3-1-3 Exhaust System which has likely been bouncing around garages for the last 30 years :)  I can't wait to see how this system sounds!  Here's the pipes and an example of what it looks like installed.

Goal is to have the bike running and ready for a show on June 1st here in Indianapolis.  http://www.rockersreunionindy.com/

Here's a bad photoshop workup of the general scheme of the paint job.  I wont know till tomorrow morning exactly what color Gray I'll be going with.  Likely going to go with more of a bluish than a green grey.

So the plan of action is to get everything powder coated and back in the garage.  Then get the engine cleaned/painted and installed and start the re-assembly of all the odds and ends.  I've completely torn down the carbs, ultrasonic'd, and rebuilt them with all new seals, fuel t's, butterfly shaft seals, etc....

I've already got a nice gathering of parts:
Norman hyde 7/8" M-Bars and grand tourismo grips
All new Caliper rebuilds, rear master cylinder rebuild, and new front mater cylinder from Mikesxs.com
all new wheel bearings, tapered steering set, swingarm bearings, etc....

Going to get:
Stainless brake lines - Probably from Paragon Performance
http://www.paragonperformance.com/Yamaha%20XS.html
looking at the Bridgestone BT45's

It will be slow going at first, but once I get the engine painted and into the frame, things should start falling into place faster!

Cheers, Joe

Cool project. Very intriguing bikes. I wish I could take one for a ride sometime to get a feel for it.

I still have never ridden it either as it wasn't running when I brought it home. Looking forward to it.

Finally making some progress.  Should have the frame/wheels/fenders/etc back from powder coaters next week and then assembly can begin. Made a mess today and sand blasted the engine.... was kind of worried about  how it would turn out.  Came out very well.

Waiting a couple days for warmer weather, but hopefully have it painted by the time I get the PC'd pcs back.

Waiting for final deliveries of the miscellaneous pieces and parts, but everything should be here soon.

Cheers, Joe

You would like it, very smooth and powerful enough, also handled fairly well considering it was somewhat tall....Larry

Picked up everything from the Powdercoaters.... Cudos to http://indypowdercoating.com for a superb job.  No complaints and will do more business with them on future projects.

Grey Turned out great.  Close up shows the color pretty well.

Now time to get the motor painted and start putting things back together.

Thanks!  I'm very excited to hear how the exhaust sounds as well.  I shopped for over a year looking for a full Hooker System.

A side project that wont happen till after the initial build is to have a remote oil filter system as the header needs removed to change the oil.

Looking to do something like the cycle X remote filter system...

Motor's now painted.... still need to do the valve cover and two side pieces, but that will be easy compared to what I did today.

VERY pleased with how it turned out....now just need to keep the temperature above 60 in the garage for the next 7 days (which will be a little difficult).

Painted with Duplicolor engine primer and semi-gloss enamel.

A friend of mine road one of these in high school back in the '80's, he really liked it.

It gets some love in this month's Motorcycle Classics too. They make an interesting comment at the end that the XS750 can be picked up for the kind of reasonable money that you used to be able to pay for a SOHC Honda.

Interesting seat on the bike before the build... bit of red leather :)  Screams 80's

Painted the Valve cover and side pieces.  Duplicolor Aluminum.  Got seatpan and other odds and ends painted with Por15 Chassis Coat.

Had to mock the bodywork up to keep motivated.  Very happy with the look and feel of the Norman Hyde M-Bars.

A friend is helping me paint everything this weekend... will be my first time using a paint gun  :o  fingers crossed.

Engines now back in the frame...helps with the motivation.  Starting to think that i'll actually get this thing done in time for the June 1st bike meetup here in Indy (http://www.rockersreunionindy.com/)

Had my first attempt at painting.  Everything came out ok, but there are minor imperfections and I made some mistakes taping :(  but there was no going back at the time so I'll just live with it for now.  Wasn't working in a good painting environment.  Might find some pin-striping or decals to mask the mistakes  :o

God I hope the motor runs in this thing!  Got it as a non-runner, so I'm going on assumption  ::)

Hey Joe.  Hope all is well over on your side of the hood.    Don't know how I missed this thread before now....saw you mention it over in Ron's thread, so I came to look.

I've never seen one of these Yamaha triples before.  Look forward to seeing/hearing it in person!
