Although I only rode to do a meet up with the guys at Four Corners, I put over 2000 miles on my Road Glide and got my Saddle Sore paper work.  I will be sending it in later this week.  I left on Friday at about 2:45pm CDT (work) and rode down I - 40 to Albuquerque NM before stopping at 2:10 am their time (3:10 mine)  Slept for a few hours and got back on the road.  Went to Gallup and then north to Shiprock and then over into AZ to Teec Nos Pos to fill up and get my final witness and gas receipt.  After that I went up to Four Corners and took a picture and then rode into Farmington NM for lunch and to pick up a few Four Corners Harley Shirts (they have much better clothes than Honda LOL LOL).  messed around for a bit and went back to Four Corners to await the arrival of team CO and team AZ.  Met everyone and then off to Cortez for a nice meal and convo with the gang (but hard to hear over the blues band at Mr. Happy's).  Said our good byes and off to hotels.  I got up the next morning and road down to Hwy US 64 and went through Taos and Angel Fire and got snowed on on three different occasions as I crossed sections of the Rockies.  Spent the night in Guymon, OK and then got up today and headed down to OK City to hit 40 back home.  Well when I got home I turned on the news and lo and behold I had just made it out of OK City before the tornado hit Moore.  Seriously, I am one lucky dude.  If I had been just a bit later I would have been right in the middle of it.  I noticed the sky had gotten black behind me, but that was behind me and I was going the other way.  Whew is all I can say.  I love riding but I don't think I would have loved riding in the tornado.

Proto, I did stop and check out the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial near Angel Fire.  Very nice.

Saturday, 5/18/13, 5:30 AM
I'm up before the alarm goes off. Check the temperature outside: 38.5*. By the time I'm ready to head out, it's warmed up to 58. I put on a down jacket under the mesh jacket, and figured I would be sweating by the time I got to the meeting point in Pine. When I descended into the Verde Valley, it did warm up a bit, but it cooled off as I climbed towards Pine. I was thinking the temps were going to be much higher, so I didn't bring heavy gloves or my leather jacket. I would live to regret that decision. It also became painfully obvious after about 30 miles that the new foam padding in my seat was woefully inadequate. :(
Heffay and friends showed up at the meeting spot about 5 or 10 minutes after I got there. We had a quick bite, gassed up, and headed on towards Winslow, with Heff leading the way on his mighty 350, while I rode trail. It was nice to just admire the scenery with out having to concentrate on the route. And talk about scenery!! The wind-sculpted rock formations jutting up out of the ground in north-east AZ were amazing. Sorry, no pics, but pictures wouldn't really do justice.
As we were approaching Chinle, there was a billboard for Ace hardware paint, a giant version of the poster featuring a CB 750 that was in all the stores a year or so ago.

My most embarrassing moment was when we went to leave 4-corners. My bike wouldn't start. After 4 kicks, nothing, not a pop. It helps if you turn the ignition switch on. :-[ :-[ :-[

All in all, it was a good ride. With warmer gear, better padding in the seat, and most of all, less wind, it would have been fantastic! It was fantastic to meet all of you, and I hope to see you all again, somewhere on the road!

PS, GZ helped this morning by putting the trash out for pickup. ;D

Wow, I got off the bike Sunday night and my ass still hurts!  Not the longest ride I've done, but it was the longest on the baby 350f.  Little thing is a screamer, especially pushing strong headwinds BOTH WAYS in 4th gear.
I left my house at 6:45 to meet my co-worker, David, and his girlfriend Kristen, at the junction of Bush Highway and Highway 87.  I may live nearby the best riding in the Phoenix Valley!  David texted, and would be there at 7:30, which turned out to be 7:45.  I was pleasantly surprised to see them both wearing helmets, even if they were only half lids.  He never wears one, but she got to him.  Here's a shot at the highway junction.

There are some big hills between Mesa and Payson, I made a lot of noise.   8)  David followed suit.  He is a very subdued guy, it was interesting to ride with him for the first time.  I was glad to see that he was a pretty good rider.  That didn't stop me from habitually checking the situation behind me though.  I usually end up in the lead, either because I'm the slowest or the fastest, haha.
We met scottly for breakfast and got to it.  Next thing we know, we're standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona.
Four corners was an interesting meeting point because we all came so far.  I think we were all afraid to stand in Utah for too long.
It was great to get to know everyone over my plate/bowl of chili and a guinness at Mr. Happy's.  I have no idea how the waitress didn't screw up our order over the volume of the band.  Back at the motel we swapped scary riding stories over a few beers and other adult beverages.

The lizard is just like his brothers... he broke into my mini-fridge after dark, I caught him in the act.

I woke up with a neck and headache, but some ibuprofen and coffee put a stop to that, luckily.  The return ride was just as windy as the day before, with a little bit of cold rain mixed in along highway 264 going west to highway 191.  If you value your spine or your ass, don't take that route, the bumps nearly crippled me.  We stopped for snacks and coffee, while I played dress up with found objects...

We decided not to do a lot of backtracking for the sake of avoiding about 40 miles of I-40... it was all up to me and baby to keep an acceptable highway pace... after catching back up to a semi after it passed us, very difficult in the wind, I tucked in behind it for the next 35 miles at a following distance of about 20-30 feet.  Drafting helped us gain about 15-20 mph over what I would have been able to do.  Once in Holbrook, I won the fuel mileage contest that scottly and I had going, for that leg at least, haha!

We gassed up and hit the road once again.  Godzilla was ready for another round of wind!

As we neared the Sitgreaves Nat'l Forest the wind out on the high plains kept me in 4th gear for about 50 miles!

On into Payson, we were all ansty to get home, shoveled our faces full of mexican food and did the trade off between scottly and I...

We all blazed a fast trail back down into the valley as scottly headed east.  I really enjoyed the last leg of my trip along Bush Highway during twilight, can't get enough of those twisties!

Stats:
847 total miles
393 miles with the lizard aboard
47 MPG guesstimate
And 1 broken ass

Don't underestimate the baby bikes, Steve. For every mile the 350 slowed to 55 MPH on grades with a head-wind, it pulled over 70 MPH on the down grades and flats, and we Never had a tail-wind. 8)

Its not so much the speed as the weight. Those semis throw out an "air wake" and can push the little bikes around.
This was the reason I wanted a 750 when I had my first 550. I know Hef can handle it, I just prefer a solid ride at high speed on the highway.

As low man on totem pole I filled the batteries at shops where I worked, clothes often looked like that.

However, I did not look like that.  ;)

Noooo, that is the new vmax, the original is much better looking!  The new version is a desecration to the vmax.  Was the fastest production bike for a number of years.

Those scoops have butterflies for ram air that open around 4k rpm... you wouldn't knock em if you rode one... scary fast off the line!

Chasing the sun..
« Reply #66 on: May 23, 2013, 07:45:12 PM »
OK, getting back on track...
I left Pine at about 6:25. The sun was already getting low, and I knew I wasn't going to make it home before dark, and that my headlight wasn't properly aimed after the ride from Mr Happy's to the motel the night before. One of my concerns was deer and such popping suddenly out of the trees in front of me, and the other was being blinded when I rode directly into the sunset. There were times when I was riding at 65 MPH around a curve, and suddenly would find the sun shining directly in my eyes, totally blinding me until I shaded them with my left hand.
By the time I got to Camp Verde, the sun was well below the horizon, and after the semi-truck drag races over the mountain on I-17, I turned off onto hwy169, so close to home I can almost taste it. (beer, that is ;D) I decided to get off 169 and take a "long-cut" the back way on surface streets about 3 miles from home, rather than deal with traffic on 69. Within 3 blocks, a deer bounded across the road about 100 feet ahead of me! I revved to motor to help scurry him off, then as soon as I looked ahead, another deer crossed my path, but this one was only about 25 feet away!!!! I was only going 25 MPH, so it wasn't really a close call, but I thought it to be a bit ironic as I was worried about animals earlier, and thought I was home-free by that time.

Glad you made it safely.

In our area, when I see a deer near the road, I slowe down no matter what I am driving.  They are full blown nutcases, travel in groups and you never know what will jump to their silly little minds.

Man what a day.  I don't know how some of you guys logged hundreds of miles riding in a day.  I logged about 300 miles round trip and that was tiresome, BUT a BLAST to ride!

Bright and early, and nice cool morning, headed out to meet CoachDoc at our said meeting point.    7:50am no one there but me.  Few bikes approaches and pass by.  No CoachDoc.  Then just few minutes past 8, a beautiful orange cb550 showed up. And that gotta be him.

Chatted up a bit, you know, bike talk and all while waiting for GreenHornett to show up.  CoachDoc bought his bike since new, and made trips to NY on it!

About 20 minutes past 8, no signs of GreenHornet, we decided start heading towards Carpinteria as we didn't want Mooshie to wait long as we were already behind schedules. Just as we were putting on our helmets, along  came green 750, with green grips and the triumph dude :)

Riding from Santa clarita to Santa Paula were pretty straight cruising along the countryside.  Highway 150 to Ojai and Carpinteria was beautiful with quite few twisties.

About 10:20am, we arrived at Carpinteria and Mooshie was already waiting for us.

Quick stop for gas and photos, Mooshie lead us up to Santa Maria through Foxen canyon, another nice scenic route with few twisties.

Then GZ decided to ride on another 550, so very quick stop on the side of the road to satisfy him.

By noon, we arrived in Santa Maria and GZ took a break and went to ride with Mooshie

And here's a quick video clip as GZ is heading up north, and I part way and head back home
