awesome pictures, but whats with the triumph in all the shots?  ;D  dont get me wrong, its a sweet looking bike, and i'd gladly ride it, and the owner is probably a decent guy, but its like Yoko being in all the photos of the Beatles!!   >:(

I'd like to motion that any bike, not a SOHC4 Honda, in a group rally photo, or in a group riding in the rally, be referred to as "YOKO" for the duration!    :P ;D

dont break up the Beatles!

After an evening of playing dress up w/ GZ I left the house around 1:30 pm. Tracy, my significant other and the one responsible for Godzillas current state of awesomeness had to leave for work a few hours earlier. Here she is saying goodbye to our house guest.

We hopped on the 1 briefly out of Pacifica and then took Skyline to Great Hwy up past the city and rolled past the Palace of the Legion of Honor on the way to the bridge. GZ wanted to stop and check out the view.

After crossing the bridge we stopped at the north end so Godzilla could destroy it, kill a few hapless tourists and generally ignore all the posted signs.

We dropped off the 101 and took 1 back out to the coast. I've probably said something like this before but that has got to be one of the best stretches of pavement on the planet. After about a million tight turns and switchbacks we stopped for a late lunch in Stinson Beach. Food was good but when I ask for more ketchup, I don't mean another little teeny cup, just bring me the bottle.

Continued up the 1 and then through farm/wine country over to meet DaSchwartz and Yoko in Cotati. I missed a turn and ended up about 8 miles north of them. Yoko guided me to a mutual meeting point which only took 2 more phone calls and one passing each other going in opposite directions to find. During the hand off I couldn't help but notice that Kens' schwartz was as big as mine.

We then took some ridiculously fun mountain roads over to meet Dave in Napa. I love when you have to slow down to like 10 mph and then just let go of the brakes, lean till your pegs grind and throttle on through it. This road had a few of those.
We stopped for refreshment at a place called Downtown Joes' on the waterfront where Dave met us for the next hand off.

After about an hour or so of swapping stories and enjoying Downtown Joes house brewed tastiness we said our goodbyes and headed out.

I headed back to Cotati and crashed on Kens couch after watching "Piranha" and "Big Trouble in Little China" then falling asleep in the middle of Quantum Leap. Sheer bliss.
The next day I headed back in the reverse of my journey there, oddly enough including the same wrong turn which gave me an excuse to head out to Bodega for some extra scenic fun. On the way there I started noticing a ton of birds flying around. They started swooping across the road and a bunch of them even started to dive bomb me. Luckily I was able to take shelter in a local church adjacent to an old school house until the flock moved on.

The rest of the trip was pretty uneventful. I managed to hit the entire stretch of 1 from Stinson Beach back to civilization w/o encountering any traffic. The new toll system on the bridge is a mystery, I rolled up to the booth and the sign said to keep going. I don't know if I screwed it up or what. We'll see if they mail me a ticket.
Can't wait to do it again next year!

So much to do, so little time.

So, following the discovery of more issues keeping me from riding in the Rally, I showed GZ his new room for the next few days, but he didn't exactly approve, and instead decided to exhale strongly as only he can do...

GZ3 round 3. Home safe. Wohoo! I'll chronicle our adventures soon. I must say Fernley, NV WalMart has some of the best people watching ever and yes, I wore sweatpants to WalMart, I'm not proud.

Better really late than really never for a riders log right??  ;D I wasnt able to ride in the first two GZ rallys, so i wanted to be participate somehow this year.

I got all my crap (gear and assentials) ready the evening before the ride. Feeling confident i had everything in order, my girlfriend and i went out to eat, where i ate and drank too much. Even with my GOOD buzz  ;D i layed awake that night antious about the next days ride.

5am. alarm goes off. I drink my coffee and go through my morning rituals  ;). pack my crap and im gassing up around the corner around 715am.

Off to Gilroy! Hopped on 680 south and passed a bunch of low riders. Gave and got a few nods.

South 101 was next. Freeway was pretty empty. The hills to my left had a cool haze around them. The temp was perfect. I kept thinking "im going on an adventure today". Kinda made me smile. I remembered my exits name, but not a whole lot more. Pull over in a parking lot to check my phones map and realize im around the corner from the meet. As i pulled in the parking lot i saw a guy on a fully flared mid 80's jap bike and i thought "Grumpy"??? na. Guy leaves and a few minutes later i see a beautiful orange Honda roll up. I instantly thought "#$%*, i should have at least washed a few parts of mine". Me and Grumpy (dave) shoot the #$%* for a minute while i drool over his STOCK paint job and custom saddle bags  8). Off to the gas station to top dave off.  (more to come)

(more)  ;) ;D
Dave had mentioned that if will probably cool off a little when we get towards Monterery. I had figured that, but at that time i had my jacket off (while waiting, not riding) because it was already staring to warm up around our parts. I figure, loose a few degrees, zip up a few zips. Well, about 15miles or so towards Monterey, i was all out of zips. i was cold. Then i remembered when someone had wrote on the board "Grumpy no like cold" and that made me laugh....but i was still cold  :-\. Left mirror decides to come loose. Try to tighten the nut and adjust while riding, but now all i see from my left mirror is my right mirror  ;D. Come over the hill and see Monterey and the beach on the right. Foggy and cold, but still a good feeling. Able to adjust my mirror when we pull off the freeway to figure out how we missed our exit.  ;D Exit found. Motel found. Mooshie found. Mooshie (lisa) invites us up to warm up. Much appreciated (for me). I get to hear stories of the GZ3 ride and stories from previous GZ tours from Lisa and Dave while i try to stop shivering  ;).

My first glimpse of GZ3. i dont think he is a morning kinda guy

Greenhornet (sal) and his cousin (triumph guy #2?? maybe?) show up. This may or may not have been before lisa was trying to explain that she is not from a loony bin, she just calls from one  ;) ;) ;D. Every one is great. Im feeling good. Now down stairs to stare at each others bikes. Mooshies fairing and GPS mount? Her bike looked great. Greenhornet's had a bad ass headlight screen and wrapped exhaust. The thing looked like a trooper. You heard about Grumpys, and "triumph guy #2?? maybe?" is just a triumph  ;) ;D. Conversation quickly turns to Grumpy's jacket. How much was it? where did you get it? will i look as cool as you in it??  ;) i will never know  :-X ;D. The gentlemen on the right asked the same questions, while Sal fixed something, triumph dude #2 maybe wished he had a honda, Dave mumbled something grumpily under his breath, and Lisa said that she had "dibs on the jacket" ;)

Time for GZ exchange. Dave asked if id like to carry him. Feeling a great honor, and very nervous, if he were to get "lost" on my watch. so i taped the #$%* out of him to my speedo and tach. safety first.  ;D

Sweatshirt and long sleeve go on for me. Grumpy just needs his jacket  :P. im feeling better. We say our good buys. on the ol hiway again. Through the haze toward santa cruz. near capitola the weekend beach people start to congregate in their cars. Grumpy stops and waits for me at the tail end of the traffic pile. One quick nod and we are off. sharing through the hiwway 1 traffic. (at least there is one good thing california). this makes a quick trip up to scotts valley. once there we find 3 old hondas waiting for us. And some heat (long sleeve off). Pete, Greg and Matt. All on great looking machines. Greg's 72 750 was fantastic. The paint was amazing. We got to chat for a little bit. and got to hear about how gregs other honda tried to kill him!   :-[ ;D. While Greg, Pete and i got to chatting, i think Dave and matt where plotting our adventure. We took off and road through some very cool little towns that i hadnt been trough in years. then it was off to the twisties. These guys chose great roads. Matt and Dave were usually a little a head of us  but always stopped and made sure we always regrouped. I had a blast. such beautiful roads. Here is us stopped off the road.

down the mountains and through the trees. What great roads. There was a big bicycle ride at that time and day, but we managed to miss intersecting into each other. I was having a blast. We turned onto hiway 84 north. fun road. lots of twists and lots of people who like twists. id guess we had gone 8 miles or so on 84 and i remember looking around and thinking that this was just fantastic. the whole area is just beautiful. how much fun i was having.

I was in the back. we were turning right? i see a motor cycle in our shoulder coming toward us.....at first i thought, why is this guy riding in the shoulder? in the mud? next to a mountain? headed right at us?? then ooooooo #$%*. mud mud mud. bike flip and guy flip. (Im sure pete could give you a better description) I remember thinking, this dude is going to crash into pete and and im going to run them the #$%* over. The dude side swipes pete. (scratch on exhaust pipe) i dont know how much closer it could have got.. idiot crashes. i swerve and move to opposite shoulder. i really didnt know what to expect from the "idiot" rider. maybe dead? maybe broken? by the time i got off my bike and went to help, this guy was trying to right his bike. sure his adrenaline was pumping. helped get his bike up and push it towards the first turnout. where pete and greg who had pulled over. idiot was very apologetic and exchanged info with pete. lots of "cagers" stopped to offer assistance. Everything worked out very well for what could have been a very bad situation. dave came back a few minutes later (no cell reception) to make sure we didnt miss our reservations. we got on out bikes and rode the 1mile to alices restaurant. fast matt had our table ready and ready for a good time.

i had a blast. im am very glad to have met all of you. i cant wait for next year. G4  ;D

this is G3 at alices. says "but...wheres my beer?...." sorry dude. next year

June 14 – The plan was to get a semi-early departure Friday morning to make it to Motorcycle Mania in Fernley before they closed at 5 PM. Matt had left GZ the Third in Deanna’s capable hands there a few days before.  The trip is 400 miles, so the 9:30 departure should have left plenty of time.  However, 8 miles after leaving the house while pulling into a gas station, a pull on the clutch resulted in a broken clutch cable.  It was the original cable, so not a big shock, though I checked it regularly and it had not given the usual warning.  A couple of calls to the local Honda dealers revealed they had none in stock and would be a week out. My buddy Steve asked if I could get a used one somewhere and I thought of a local m/c wrecking yard.  I called and was told they had a lot of cables. So I rode back home unable to disengage the clutch.  Luckily, traffic was light, I hit all the lights and I never had to stop at any intersections.  Once down to the yard, the proprietor directed me to a wood box outside.  Here is what I found. Lots of cables, indeed –

Not a needle in a haystack, but close.  After pawing through speedo, tach, and brake cables for a few minutes I found clutch cables, but all were way too long or too short.  I decided to walk the yard to see if there were were any CB750s.  I found this –

The frame is a ’75 F, the engine is an earlier K, the front end was something I didn’t recognize, but there was an aftermarket clutch cable on there.  The cable was nearly completely seized, but was otherwise intact.  I figured some cable lube would free it up and at least it was the right length.  Sure enough I was able to free it up back home.  A little black electrical tape wrapped around it to fix some chafed through spots on the sheathing and it was good to go.  We were back on the road with only a 3 hour delay.  That put us in Fernley too late to get to Motorcycle Mania, but they opened at 9 AM Saturday morning, so no problem.  We set up camp at Fort Churchill state park about 25 miles south of Fernley.  It is a pretty good campground if you are ever that way.

June 15 - Back to Fernley the next morning to Motorcycle Mania.  Thanks to Deanna for helping us out,  She said she was sorry to see GZ go.

Just an abandoned bar somewhere out of Winnemuca, I think –

On US95 north, back in the wide open spaces –

On NV140 headed toward Denio, it opens up even more. The sign made GZ a little nervous.  He is a little bit of a city boy.  I guess it should be obvious by the way he dresses –

A little break about 60 miles farther –

Here’s some pix in and around Denio, NV.  I like the camper –

Harney County line, which also happens to be the Oregon line, but that isn’t mentioned.  Shows what they think is more important out here –

As it turns out, it wasn’t 179 miles to gas after all, only 125 or so.  Fields, OR is a very nice spot and Fields Station usually has gas –

Frenchglen, OR –

SE Oregon has its share of lava flows -

Harney Lake –

Back in Idaho –

June 16, Sunday morning at Mountain Home, headed for the handoff in Carey, ID with Motorfist and crew –

Looking back the way we came on US20 –

Hill City, ID –

Innaresting –

Carey, ID and the handoff to Motorfist and crew. Thanks to Josh, Michelle, and Dave.  It was great to meet you –

Here is something for Studebaker fans (I are one), a decent Gran Turismo we spotted at Fairfield, ID –

All in all, a great 3 days of riding, weather was ideal, the bike was perfect except for a small hiccup at the beginning, met some good folks, what more can you ask for?  1325 miles, accompanied by GZIII for 706 of them.
