Clacking noise in the top end?
« on: March 29, 2013, 03:20:52 PM »

Quick question for those that know these CB SOHC 4 cylinders:
Ever since the first time I started this thing, there is a clacking noise that comes from the top end.  The bike seems to run fine, and its not an overly loud clacking noise, but it is there non-the-less.

Is this anything to worry about?

Other than that concern, I've been riding around a little, and its been a lot of fun.  Can't wait to get more time on this thing as the weather gets nicer!

These SOHC's have fairly noisy top ends from the valve train clacking around and the cam chain making a little noise. If your valve clearance is within spec and your cam chain has been adjusted I wouldn't worry about it.

The younger the owner the quieter they expect the engine to run.

When a young man hears a 1956 chevy run, they think something is wrong with it.

Haha I'm 25 and my friends with new bikes ask me whats wrong with it all the time. Especially when its cold or when the clutch is extra noisy if I haven't balanced the carbs in a while. I just tell them that's all part of the character.
