Old time CB750 rider from Kansas
« on: March 26, 2013, 06:33:09 PM »
Hi, folks! I remember seeing my first 750 in 1969 in Japan. The sound was stunning! The looks were so otherworldly compared to other bikes. By '71 I temporarily quit riding other brands so I could buy a CB750 of my own.  It was a gold '71.  I rode it '76, about 20,000 miles a year. It never gave trouble, other than being a spark plug eater.  I sold it to get married to my wife of 36 years, a wise move!  I rode other brands until about 1985 or so, when I purchased my mint condition Rickman CR750. I have it still. Because it is so beautiful, I can't sell it, but because it sucks so bad in the comfort area, I rarely ride it. It is in a controlled environment, so looks as good as the day i first got almost 30 years ago.  It even has the original tires on it. The previous owner stated he put probably 50 miles on it while he had it. I also have one sorry looking stock '71, two period bobbers (one with good Invader wheels) that are nice survivors, and one unknown rigid frame roller that I will build to replicate my early '70's AMEN chopper. I will then be able to relive my mis-spent youth! A fairly recent bonus junk score for me was finding a nice Drouin supercharger setup, complete, from the original owner. I also got a Mikuni carb and manifold he made to replace the fuel injection (which is still in the box of stuff), an unknown to me, but cool, 4-1 exhaust, the 16" rear wheel he used, and extra sprockets of various sizes.  I figured I'd better grab it at $600, with no dickering. Now to figure out which bike to put it on.....    Another odd piece of junk for a CB750 is an original 1st generation Vetter Phantom fairing. It's my second one, I don't know if I'll use it or not.  I think they look kinda cool, and makes decent wall art if nothing else. All I need now is a nice original paint bike and I'll be satisfied. Although "sandcast, saaandcaaast" does go through my mind now and then. HA!

Welcome!
I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say we'd love to see some photos of your bikes whenever you get around to it. You'll find a lot of knowledge and a lot of photos of impressive and awe inspiring bikes on this forum. No shortage of either.

Where are you in KS? We'll be recruiting riders for Team 4 of the 2013 SOHC4.net Relay Rally soon. Check it out and let us know.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Thanks for the welcome, guys.  I'll try to get around to some pics soon. The 750 bug has been festering in me for a long time. I have had my Rickman a long time, the other bikes are all recent acquisitions. They were picked up cheap as non runners. The best bobber would be fairly easy to get going, the guy took the carbs off to keep his son from riding it. The biggest issue is him letting it sit with gas in the tank for quite a while. It is very rusty in there, but still held the varnish that used to be fuel. The other bobber has a built engine with 1 mile on it. It was tapping, so he shut it down and parked it. I'll have to explore that one, it may be minor or major, but for $100 I took it. Lord knows what the two stock rough old scoots need.  Both were running when parked, many years ago. At $50 and $85 I couldn't resist their scruffy magnificence. The chopper lacks an engine at this time. I bought the cheap stockers  for the engines, but in the end I could not part them out. I assume all need the front brake system redone, carbs rebuilt, tanks cleaned, various bearings checked, cleaned, replaced, adjusted, etc. You know the drill on these old bikes. The Rickman needs a battery and gas, and the last time I fired it up, it had a small petcock leak. I'm knee deep in rattlesnakes with other projects, so my 750's haven't had much attention yet, other than trying to keep them properly stored. I am playing with a few older cars too, as well as a few old BMW bikes, so I get spread pretty thin sometimes. By the way, what exactly is this Ride that was mentioned? A relay of some kind? A full cross country ride?
Later, Bob

Bob,

The Relay is something I hatched up in 12/2010. The first Relay covered 20,000+ miles throughout the lower 48, DC and 7 Canadian provinces over a 6 month period before going to New Zealand, Australia, England and Finland. We Relay a Godzilla mascot between riders by a connecting the dot format. This proves continuity all the while we get to meet other SOHC4 riders. Plus it gets our members to get their bikes out on the road and makes mechanics out of many. Some of us have ridden 2000+ miles on a Relay while some of us ride a few miles or are unable to ride because of time, family, bike condition, jobs, etc. It's about the bikes, riding them and meeting other members which we just don't do at the keyboards. It's been great! Hopefully you can do a few miles for Team 4/Team Central Rockies and meet up with us along the way. It's one of the Topics on the main Index. Check it out. Update your profile with your city. Kansas is a big state. PM me if you need specific info as it'll get to me better that this thread. I'll be heading through KS in May with an over night in Wichita. Maybe a beer or 2 if your close to my route. No real time to deviate on this ride though as I have 2 days to cover 1100 miles.
