Broken ring on F2
« on: March 30, 2013, 06:31:14 PM »
I pulled jugs off of the F2 engine tonight and there is a broken ring on #2.  I understand rings for F2s are not existent, or are they?

I am not sure what to do here, I am in the engine 35 bucks for bead blasting before I got guides out of the head.  Should I pull before it is too late?  Or go with regular K pistons and regular K head on those jugs?   Even if I find a ring, I still need to rebuild the whole head and with Neway seat cutter that's about $600+.  Also I remember from my 2 stroke days, getting a piston ring without breaking is a major pita....

Anybody has an engine for sale?   ;D

Last I kinda recently checked they are once again available from Honda. I'd say it's harder to break a ring than NOT break a ring. Slow and careful. Fit one end in the top groove then work to the other end and drop it in. Then take it to the next groove the same way. Do the oil rings first. Fit the first ring then lift it out and place it below the land. Install the spacer then put that first ring back in then do the second ring of the 3 ring set.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

How is the cylinder? Any groove where the ring broke? Taper or wear in the walls? For the $600 price of the cutter can you hire a valve job? I wouldn't normally re-use rings anyway.

They are indeed available:

Back in the day rebuilding my cz 2 stroke I remember braking ring too. Also remember seeing a special piston ring tool to make for easy and safe installation.

Lots of folks use band clamps lightly with some lube for ring compressors.

Why is it that many people just want to throw away their engine and get another one?
Makes no sense. Then you have more problems and another unknown engine that also has problems.  There are no brand new rebuilt engines for your bike just sitting on a shelf ready for you to buy at a very low price and to just install.

What I would do is to repair what you have.
You DO not have to buy a $600 Neway seat cutter unless you want to start a business
There are machine shops that can do that.
But NOT a car repair shop that knows nothing about Honda engines.
Make sure the machine shop knows about your engine.

Just put a little more effort into getting the parts.
Broken piston rings can be caused from lugging an engine.
Do you know what that means?
Lugging an engine is when the operator drives slow in a very high gear.

$600 is the cutter plus head kit from cyclex -  getting a tool instead of outsourcing leaves me with a tool.  Always prefer this way.

The engine, I don't know much about except it is F2, actually F3 and it turns over, shifts and needs a new valve train.  If it was K, life would be easier, but I am definitely going to get it on the road.

Eventually:)

You could ship the head to Cycle=X and let them do all of the work on it.
Is that a possibility?
