Castrol GTX, anyone using it? Updated with picture!
« on: April 01, 2013, 10:44:17 PM »
I'm just curious if anyone is using GTX because way back in ancient times when these bikes were new, Castrol GTX 20W-50 was THE oil to use. I had a look at it today and it's not Energy Conserving so it's okay for the wet clutch.
This is not meant to be an oil thread please, I'm just curious is all.
Cliff.

It sucked in bikes in the 70's, probably no different today.
My 550 came with it from new and needed new ring after 3 months
Automotive oil will break down real quick, the transmission trashes it (plus the clutch will slip because of the friction modifiers)

Not all automotive oils have friction modifiers. Pennzoil was very popular back in the day...

I used to use it exclusively. Worked fine. Decided to switch to a synthetic without friction modifiers a while back, but I wouldn't hesitate to use the Castrol GTX........ and I'm not a big believer in motorcycle oils vs. automotive oils.

I've used it for years both in 10/40 and 20W50 selections and my rings are fine. While likely not the best oil it does the trick. Odd that it only needed one ring and you associate that with the lubricant. Even lesser oil will not destroy a ring in three months unless you circumnavigated the planet?  ;)

Has Castrol been owned long by BP?
Their gasoline I am not fond of due to issues which cars I have owned had less performance when using their fuel.

Controversy for breakfast...

Never had a problem.  Both bikes engines have never been opened up.  All original.

Agree with Retro Rocket...Penzoil was very popular back in the day. I used it on all my bikes as did my biker buds and never had an oil related issue. Clutches were always fine and bikes never needed to be opened up. I can not believe Cliffy started an oil thread. :) Is he new here?

My local Pep boys has Castrol motorcycle oil. Been using it for a couple of years with no issues.

Sorta-kinda related.....a lot of the XS650 guys use Pennzoil automotive oil. It works fine in the XS, but the clutch will start slipping a little sooner than with motorcycle oil. However, the price difference is so great, you can change your oil every 1,000-1,500 miles and still be ahead cost-wise. And you always have clean oil.

Cliff, I'll pussy foot around here before they delete this from the kingdom. I've always used GTX until recently, now use their 4T including my race engine. It's supposed to be motorcycle specific?? I trust Castrol.

If there are friction modifiers the clutch will slip (unless you never use more than 3,000rpm?)
The clutch will slip with non- friction modifier oil as well, Honda designed it that way

Was full set, not just one, I missed the 'S' on the end of ring (s)
Valve seals were also worn
It was re-built under warranty
I just don't like GTX, there were better oils for bikes that got ridden hard even back in 70's
I always rode gentle for first 3 miles to make sure engine was up to temp (under 2 k first half mile, under  4k for the rest)
Never believed in letting engine idle for extended periods to 'warm up'

BP took over Castrol in 2000, back then it was BP Amoco after the 1998 merger of British Petroleum and Amoco.

I run the 10w-40 Castrol Actevo Motorcycle oil. However during break-in I ran a conventional 10w-40 motorcycle oil. I wonder if I should try the Actevo v-twin 20w-50 in the summer. I imagine it would be well suited for higher temps.
