Hello from Toronto
« on: April 03, 2013, 02:36:41 PM »
Hi all I'm a new and proud owner of a 1978 cb550k. This is my first bike and first of anything that I'd be working on and have very limited knowledge and experience. I purchased her from a man that collects older bikes and cars. During the time I purchased her the bike actually had a valid license plate. The clock reads that it has 65000km on her. The bike is mostly stock. The only thing I can spot that has been changed is that it has a 4 to 1 headers. The previous owner claimed that he had a mechanic rebuilt the engine. The numbers do not match but it is still a 78 engine.

So far I've encountered a couple of problems that I managed to fix. One being that the horn was not working and the other being that the signal lights weren't working. It was all a matter of wires being mixed up (Thank goodness for the wire diagram from here). I just noticed that the fork boots are cracked meaning it will most likely need a fork rebuild. I also blew the main fuse when trying to start the bike through the button. The bike does start and it idles really funny. It idles around 1200 to 1500 rpm which is fine but when I blip the throttle the rpm jumps to 3k to 4k and hangs there for a second or two then goes back down to idle. I'm thinking the needles might be stuck. Or carb sync might be needed.

I know this forum will help me get this bike in running condition. I'm looking forward to becoming an active member on this forum and hopefully meeting some of you who are from Toronto.

Anyway thanks for reading and here are some pictures.

Welcome!  Hope to see you around sometime in person.  I live north of the city up by Uxbridge so if you ever get to ride out here, look me up.

Besides the exhaust, the bars and seat look to be non-standard at first glance - but heck it still looks like a lot of original.

Right on!! Another fellow 416'r!! :)

As for your throtle.. I suggest picking up a fresh set of throtle cables.. Kinda sounds like the issue. But never hurts to sync the carbs, dump the old gas for fresh if its been sitting for a while.

Thanks for the input. I did adjust the throttle cable so when I release the throttle it rolls back nicely with a snapping sound. I will try a new throttle cable.
