Minnesota! CB750 With A Few Pics
« on: April 06, 2013, 08:08:33 AM »
Hello!

Looks like I'll be graced with the knowledge of the SOHC for my ol 1978 CB750 I picked up a week or two ago.

Details on the bike:

1978
26,xxx miles
Black (I think)
Runs like piss for the first 2 miles then runs like a dream
Steering Bearings are bad (nice and shaky, can't be too comfortable)
Headlight points towards pluto
Will hit the ton
Has Brakes!

So pretty damn perfect.

My name is William Peckels and I'm from Minneapolis Minnesota where it is still semi-frozen (it snowed yesterday), which is nothing out of the ordinary. I've owned a few new bikes and decided reliability was over rated. I started really looking into the awesome creativity that some of the builders on Bikeexif were doing. I'm currently a Mechanical Engineering student so I'm pretty sure I can just park her in the building and go to town on it! Unfortunately I'm on a college budget, so progress will be slow where free isn't the price.

I'll throw up some pics in a bit!  Sorry!
Cheers!

Johnie,

That's a good looking bike right there!  If mine was nearly that clean I'd probably just leave her stock. I took her out for a ride today and It's smoothed out to near perfection! It sat for about 8 months before I cranked her over and I'm really glad everything is working properly. Thanks for the pic!

WHP...that is a real fine looking CB there. Steering bearings...there is a couple good threads here on that. Should be able to get a set of All Balls for around $45 or so. 26,000 miles she is barely broke in. So is that the original exhaust? Looks pretty dang good. Keep in mind these bikes are cold starters and yours maybe could use a carb clean in the future which would help out on the start. Could also try putting some Sea Foam in the tank to give it a little clean until you get at the carbs. You will get many envious looks riding that. Can you give us a little bit of history on it?

Welcome from Texas. I have a K8 that looks just like that.  When cold starting, I normally warm up my old Hondas for about two minutes before riding.
The stock exhaust in very good cond are getting hard to find and valuable.

Johnie, Thanks! I actually just picked up a set yesterday. So I'm sure one of these days I'll throw them in. As for the exhaust, it is the original. It sounds pretty good as far as my ears go. There are a few pin holes on the mufflers and condensation of water has taken its toll on the tips so there is are those rust holes. I'm not sure that I'll keep them on there though for very long.

As for the history on the bike, I only met one owner. He was about 70, so he was downsizing his fleet. He had already sold 3 of them to a guy who was buying them and shipping them back too the motherland of Japan! I saved this guy the day before the Japan man was supposed to come back. I got her for about 1000$ and she wouldn't idle at all without some choke. But I dropped some seafoam and put on a few miles and now it runs beautiful.

Stev-o, Thanks! It doesn't help that it's 50F around here... Once she had some warm weather yesterday it ran great right away. It just keeps getting better. The exhaust has a few pinhole leaks and the tips of course are rusted like the picture.. I wish it was nicer!

That's a great looking bike!   If it were mine I think I would leave it stock, but I changed my CB750 K2 to a K1 so who am I to
talk   ;D   I live up in Ely and cant wait for spring so I can get the K1 on the road.  Been restoring it for more than a year now.
Welcome to the group and good luck with your project.

Thanks KC-Northstar!  I thought about going the stock route, but they made thousands of those. As long as I like it doesn't matter much.

Ely huh!  That's a ways up north! I have some friends that go to the community college up there. Good luck with your bike man!
