Replacement breaks for CB550k1
« on: June 04, 2013, 08:27:38 AM »
Hey Guys,

Is there an entire brake systems or replacement calipers anything that fit the cb550k1? I was thinking something newer/better to avoid issues.  There is some serious wear and tear on this set (Even though I haven’t open them myself) I know they are old and messed up.  I may be being lazy but this #$%* is old and I want new and functional!!  Let me know your thoughts.  Positive, Negative or in between hit me with it.  Thanks.

Lemme brake it down for ya.

Without investing incredible amounts of money and time (machining adapters for calipers and floating disks, GSXR frontend swaps, etc.), here are your options to improve your front brakes:

New/rebuilt MC
Stainless brake lines
New brake pads
Fully rebuilt caliper (seal, piston if pitted, cleaned bore and passages).

If you still aren't satisfied once you've done that (at this point you're gonna be $100-150 in the hole with just one brake), you can try a dual disk setup. Search for "dual disk CB550" and you should find plenty. I wish I could tell you that there is an easy, modern, and cheap alternative to these early disc brake systems, but there isn't.

it all comes down to time and $  ;)
modern sport bike front ends can be adapted.  been done many times.
original brake systems can be rebuilt to near new looking and functional condition.
parts are readily available.

how much do you want to spend? ;D
