Inks you are 100% correct. I did not see the eyelets the first time. If you go to a army surplus store you can find all sorts of thing to hang on those eyelets. Ammo pouch for tools, knife scabbard long list. You may have been in the service and know this already.

You can make your own hangars from 1/16" music wire if you want to use the original style attachments. Army surplus store will have implements to hang on the belt, look at them for the pattern. Or, use the sewn belt flap?/loop approach like you did on your purse.
The Molle system replaced this design.
