the engine on my cb350f project has 11K miles it (hasn't run since 1985) and am very happy with what i've found so far. no pieces/parts and very little sludge in the oil pan, oil pickup screen was clean, engine internals when viewed from underneath look new. no engine cover leaks. #1, #2, #3 exhaust ports are dry but sooty, #4 exhaust port is very oily.
i removed the head to check it out. piston tops are sooty, except #4 is oily.
i cleaned up the compression chambers and filled them up with light oil last night. chambers 1, 3 and 4 were still full (even tho i noticed a very slight dribble of oil in the exhaust port on #1). combustion chamber for #2 drained out thru the exhaust port.
since #1 and #2 had leaked oil but had sooty exhaust ports, am assuming i'll need to lap the exhaust valve seats. insufficient seal allowed some blow-by, but valve stem seals are good.
since #4 didn't leak oil, but had an oily exhaust port, am assuming the valves are sealing properly but i have a valve guide seal leak there.
my plan is to refresh the head by lapping the seats and replacing valve guide seals. sound logical?
i'd prefer to purchase an inexpensive valve spring compressor rather than modifying a c-clamp or fabbing something.
have done a search and wondering if anyone can confirm that the "tusk" brand L235-689 compressor tool works ok on a cb350f ? they're available at rocky mountain atv and amazon for about $39.
