1971 CL350 clean up
« on: December 30, 2016, 11:23:24 PM »
Picked this up today for my girlfriend.

Haven't seen it run yet but was told it ran 2 summers ago.  Bought it off a friend for $500.  He had new sprockets, a chain and a new battery for it.  And a title.

Pipes are solid but speckled with surface rust.  Tank has a couple of dents but looked relatively clean.

My goal is to get this thing running and safely on the road by May.  I know its missing a couple of cylinders.  I'm looking forward to hearing it run and taking it out for a quick rip around the block.

Your bike has double the number of cylinders that most of my herd has. Nothing wrong with any of that.

Looks good and I like the color.

Lucky girl and lucky you. Nice CL too. My pal had one like that before he got his gold cb350 in 71. Is it a 70?

For the girlfriend...right...at least that is what you told her. Used that one on my wife a few times, but she is on to me now. :)  Nice find though!

Just make sure that the wife doesn't find out it's for the girlfriend.

Started getting familiar with the CL350 over the long weekend.  Honestly spent most of my time straightening out the garage.  We moved into this house in March and the garage still hasn't been put away properly.  I've still got a long way to go, but at least I can find my tools and have a place for the CL to sit with some room to move around it.

I charged the battery that the PO gave me and put some gas in the tank figuring I might as well try to fire it up.  Gas immediately starting leaking out of the balancing hose.  No clamps on it.  >:(  I disconnected one of the petcock hoses and tried to drain the gas back into the can, but got no flow.  Not really what I was hoping for, but I didn't really have much of an expectation.  Really just hoping for the best.  Gotta expect the worst in the situation though.

So... I am going to pull and clean the carbs, remove and check out the petcock and check out the ignition system over the weekend.  Hoping that I'll get a little further with her and have something better to share in a few days.

Got the carbs off and apart this weekend.  Got one cleaned in my HF ultrasonic cleaner and hope to finish the second one tomorrow night.  Both carbs were pretty gunked up.  The slides and floats were stuck in both of them.  Hoping that getting these in proper shape will be a huge step towards getting the 350 back on the road.

Starting to pull parts off here and there and am finding that overall its much cleaner than my CB750 when I started on it.  Still anxious to get it running and give it a good washing.
