Wiring diagram question
« on: April 07, 2013, 08:59:21 PM »
In recent years I've spent a lot of time pouring over the wiring diagram for my '74 550. I made a high quality scan and saved it to my desktop so that I can look at it closely on my 24" hidef monitor- much easier on my old eyes. My question is this. It is easy to see where bullet connectors are in the diagram, but what exactly do you find if you were to take the wiring harness apart when the diagram just shows a tee in the line, usually highlighted with a dot where the tee comes together. Is there a connector there, just a splice, whatever. In all the years I've had my bike I've never had to take apart or replace the harness, but this may be an issue soon based upon recent problems. Check the diagram from the shop manual I've attached to see what I am referring to.

They have a "splice" at those spots. On some bikes it is just a spot where the wires are twisted together and soldered, on others it has a little brass or tin ferrule crimping the wires together. If it is a Black or Green wire, it needs to be "heavier duty" than any other circuit, which usually received the ferrules (because solder on a heating joint can become brittle from high currents). You can simulate that ferrule yourself by using the metal collars inside of a common wire splice (usually a Red one or Blue one), covered with a bit of heat shrink tubing, if you're trying to repair one.
