Bought a bike without keys. Any ideas?
« on: April 08, 2013, 10:18:25 AM »
I did a search but didn't see anything specific to my issue.

So basically is there a way to get a key made? Locksmith or something or am I going to hunt down a new ignition, seat, gas and fork lock? Thanks

I'm assuming you have the ignition, seat lock etc still on the bike? Look there and you'll see a code stamped where the key goes in, something like "T1234". Then you can go to hondakeys.com or search ebay (I recall one vendor named "dgs38" I believe, and there are others), and look for your key code.
Honda dealer or locksmith may also be able to sort you out - haven't gone that route myself.
Final option would be replacing keys and ignition as a set but you shouldn't have to resort to that.

I can recall a few of my restos i've done where I just gutted the tumblers out of the locks so anything stuck in there would work. I used any old honda key I had and it would turn on and off. never had a problem with it.

That was in my 'poorer' days when even a few bucks for a key was a big deal. Just saying it's an option for things like steering and seat locks etc.

Once you gut those tumblers out, you can assemble them to match a key of your choice, not difficult at all.

My local shop has most of the keys, I'm sure others do too. they go by the number. If the number looks strange it may be an aftermarket switch already in there.

I lost my keys to my 76 CB550 and I took the ignition switch to a locksmith and he made a new key with just that.  It also worked on the fork and seat without taking it to him.  My dealer said the lock number I had did not exist.  My cost was less the $15 for two new keys.  A real deal as it took him about 30 minutes to do.
There you are, another way to get a key.

I bought pre cut spares off eBay and found a smith to cut some.
The code was on both the key and the ignition. T1234 example.

DONT HAVE HIS NAME OFF THE TOP OF HEAD, BUT DO A GOOGLE SEARCH FOR A LOCKSMITH IN CALIFORNIA, LICENSE4, BONDED, CERTIED BY CALIFORNIA AND INSURED.  HE WILL ASK FOR COPY OF YOUR DRIVER LICENSE AND POSSIBLY THE TITLE IN YOUR NAME.  LIKE 30 BUCKS FOR KEYS.  I have used him twice with fast efficient results.
