sorry for thread jacking but I want your input on my fork conversion set up. I machined a new straight axle to fit the stock hub then made bushings that fit into the larger gsxr forks and pinch down on the axle. The fit is super tight but should I be worried about lateral movement? (still need to make spacers for the hub)

Looks like a faster easier way of fitting the stock wheel to a modern fork assembly, but the large diameter axle is considerably stronger than the 15mm (35yr old) stock axle.

Yea I know I machined a completely new axle out of stainless so i figure it should be plenty strong.

Drill, tap and add a washer and countersunk allen head to end of axle shown...easier to keep that slight preload on the bearings and pull all ther slop out...

While you're working that out, did you get some miles (or kilometers) on it yesterday?  Before it was all over, it shaped up to be a very nice day down here.
Take care,
David

Good news Jim. If worse come to worse you may have to ride the Ducati. Thats a tough decision to make huh? Yea right! Bring it along, I would love to take a rip on her. Never mounted a Duc!

Be forewarned, it's hard to go back...

I'm trying like hell to talk myself into getting a Street Triple, but all I can think about is a Monster 1100.  My wife's M620 and my own SV650 before that kind of ruined me - 90° twins are the stuff...

I'll always love I4's, but a nice 90° twin is something special.  Probably the smoothest thing you can ride other than an I6.

FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.

Hardley Sportster
Buell S1 Lightning
RC51
and now the Grand Daddy, Ducati 999R

I never tire of the heart and soul of a twin.
I think you should wash your hands for typing something that even implies that a Sportster and a 999R have anything in common in terms of heart or soul. ;)

Hell ya!

She's ready now.
Better than before.
Just not perfect.

Gonna confirm the timing, sync the carbs and if nessesary, play a bit with needle height and air screws.

See you Friday for breakfast.  :)

Plus, have you seen the prices of carbon fiber cloth lately! It has gone through the roof for some of the weaves. Supply is short and demand is high as a result...thus price is worse than gasoline...so to speak.

If you're not gonna remove those caliper bosses on the left fork, at least mount the camera on the right! ;)

Seriously, looks awesome, so glad to see that you're happy with the bike and having fun with it! :D
