Is it possible to make my exhaust quieter?
« on: July 25, 2006, 10:01:53 AM »
Hi all,

Has anyone been able to make their exhaust quieter?  I have a kerker 4-1 aftermarket exhaust with a removable baffle inside the muffler.  Its pretty loud on the highway above 60mph.  On longer rides, and on daily highway commutes, I wish the pipe wasn't as loud as it is.  There are no holes in the system and the exhaust gaskets are new.  All bolts are tight.

Barring a new exhaust system and ear plugs,  is there something I can do to the baffle to make it quieter?

Some baffles are able to be repacked with a fiberglass material. I would think that a kerker could be but I have not used one. generally you can just look at your baffle and it will be obvious ;)

I had a Kerker for a 400F and it had some rock wool stuff wrapped around the baffle tube, held on with wire. Without it the thing was much louder, which I liked at the time.
You can try fibreglass from house insulation to see if it works, but it doesn't last very long. Most accessory catalogs have the rock wool repack kits for their mufflers, most any brand should be useable.

pretty much anywhere that does MX/dirt bikes will have sliencer repacking material. just jamb as much as possible in there. the kerkers were always stupid loud without a similar performance gain (plus 150db, and +3hp ;D) when you get the baffle out take some weasurments, one of the HD style may fit and be quieter

Quite a few shops will have the packing. There may be more than one type so ask what might work best for your case.

Thanks everyone.  :)

I'll look for the muffler packing.  I did have the baffle out years ago, and I remember that it had no material at all in or around it.  Thinking back to when I bought the bike... and the PO saying that "he used to take the baffle out 'cause it sounded cool"...it makes sense now!!

FYI-

Found some high temp muffler packing material on Ebay for $7 shipped.  wrapped around baffle and used some twist ties to secure.

Exhaust is MUCH quieter now!!  8) 8)

Thanks all.
