I would look at it as a day when your entire life could have changed for the worse.

But you came out of it smelling like a rose thanks to the police.

Like I said, if you called them and thanked them they would think you are a very wise person.

Lucky, You're probably right, but I'm still stubborn/annoyed so I won't be sending flowers anytime soon  :P

I am keeping it in perspective though. I few hundred dollars isn't more than a *potential* incident, but like I said, I phone call would have been nice. (Even after the fact, I never received a notice of the incident and just stumbled upon it by chance. I could have been months before I found out if I had been more busy).

it wouldve been too hard to just throw some sand over the spillage and turn the fuel tap off,now lets see,a fire crew and a couple of cops couldnt figure that out.

Lick your wounds and more on. It would cost more time and money than it is worth! Next time you will remember and sometimes lessons cost money.  You should be riding and forget the pain(wallet) remember the lesson. Good  luck in the future

its a great way to get old junk cars removed for free?ring them from a phone box and say it stinks.

Wish it were that easy. I had agreed to replace the engine and trans in a Ford Crown Vic but the owner never got the engine or trans I needed and ended up abandoning the car in my driveway for over a year. Local police cried a million tears about it being my problem not the towns prob and that it would be a waste of tax payer $ for them to tow it away. I'm not making this up either. Gee that's funny, I just so happen to be one of those taxpayers and all I'm asking for is a return for my tax $. Once I figured out my legal rights I ended up calling the local salvage yard, explained the situation and they took it for free.

I must say the $15 per day in the impound is more reasonable than I would've expected but the damage to the tank and turn signals would definitely have me pissed too. I'm sorry to hear what you went through.

Except for a spun bearing in the engine the car was actually in good shape in fact initially nothing was wrong with the trans until he towed it to my house. He brought it over on a tow dolly but didn't remove the drive shaft which is a big no-no with late model Ford transmissions and by the time he got to my house smoke was coming from underneath so I crawled underneath and the trans was literally smokin hot, it was so hot trans fluid was bubbling out from the trans pan gasket. I informed him that not only did he need another engine but he needed a trans too and that extra cost of the trans is what pretty much killed the plan. I found a source for an engine and trans but he never came up with the $ and never returned phone calls so it just sat until I got fed up with it.

seriously... they did have the right to go in to find the problem but how hard would it have been to open the door to air it out, turn off the gas...

Just go file a claim against the PD in small claims court.  You might get a judge that appreciates
Motorcycles. Claim would be too small to be worth calling a lawyer.

Not defending the cops but doubt they would think "oh, let's check the petcock, it might have just have been left on".

It was more like "damn ol bike is leaking gas, call a wrecker to get it out of here ASAP before it catches fire".

I'm a bit late to this party and a tad confused about where the bike was being stored. You keep referencing a "garage" but it seems like the bike was inside the condo? I can understand the danger if it was in the condo, but if it was the garage then wtf?

All in all at least you got the bike back although the dent in the tank and the crushed blinkers would set me off. Is there really nothing that can be done about that? I luckily haven't experienced a tow (yet?) but that seems like a load of horse-#$%*.
