electric start functioning well but Kickstart is not!
« on: April 02, 2014, 12:15:06 PM »
I have recently bought a CB550 '76 and It runs nicely and turns on quick with the electric start however the kickstart is not working I don't get much resistance from the kickstart either. my question is how to go about fixing it?

The kickstart ooperates on the transmission, there's a ratchet mechanism that should engage when the lever moves off its rest. That's the likeliest place to look for the problem. If the bike can be ridden, then the clutch and gearbox are working. If you're just starting it and haven't ridden it, confirm that the clutch is engaged - the kickstart needs that to work. On an engine with no clutch the kickstarter will have very little resistance. Note that if it's working, clutch or not, it will turn the sprocket (and rear wheel if connected) if the gearbox is in gear.

I've been riding the bike every few days and the clutch has no problems. can i reach the ratchet mechanism without removing the engine from the frame or am i going to have to remove it and then remove the clutch and crankcases before getting to the transmission?

I believe the mechanism is inside with the rest of the transmission.  Looking at a 550 parts list, it certainly appears that way.
