Drag rear cush-drive question
« on: April 14, 2013, 12:21:55 AM »
Do you drag race guys know of any updates/mods which can be done  to the cush-drive of the rear drum hub on my project. Are there any harder rubbers available ,or will I just have to  check them regularly , and replace with stock rubbers when necessary? Just a bit of background , the rear wheel is to be fitted to my P/S project bike, and hopefully will be getting some serious abuse in 2014 ;D.  I'm having a 5.5 ins ally rim laced up (using the heaviest stainless spokes that my wheelbuilder can source) to a K7 rear hub and I'll be fitting a M/T 18/7ins slick to this combo when I get the wheel back ::). Any advice you can give would be a great help guys . Greg "H"

Greg ,cant see big  problem with using cush drive hub, dont know of any mods , pretty much all we had in the day ,but we werent making hole lot of power, As you say,  may have to replace them frequenty ,if you going to respoke the wheel why not use smaller lighter hub , or you want to keep that old skool look

Thanks for the response sohc guy ;). I thought that may be the case . I don't recall having any issues with the drive system the last time I raced a sohc Honda , but then again it didn't have the drum rear brake, and it wasn't running a rear slick tyre, and also, It wasn't making the sort of power that I'm hoping this new bike will make .
Another question for you mate  . I've ordered a set of heavy duty clutch hub rubbers/rivets off Voxonda, and am planning on using a pair of heavy duty primary chains as well . Do you use a similar set up , or if not, what have you found that works for you ? Cheers Greg "H".

If you are going to get a load of HP out of a SOHC motor, I would be looking at the transmission. I ran one in the high 10 and ran a 5.5 goodyear with no problem. I put it on NOS and ran through 3 transmission in one year.

I couldn't agree more . I will be endevouring to make the bottom end of the motor as bullet proof as I can .And although the bike will end up resembling a mid-seventies P/S bike externally when it's finished, I have no interest in fitting 70s bits inside the motor.
