damaged cooling fins
« on: April 13, 2013, 12:08:31 PM »
I have got a couple of slight chips on three of the engine cooling fins, does anybody have any good ways of repairing them, the engine is out but I dont want to strip it if possible.

I used an epoxy clay to replace a chunk out of the very top fin on my 750. That was about 6 years ago and it's still there, no problems.

Bob I know it has been a long time but do you recall the brand name? Is it the kind with two colors you knead together?

I do recall that. it was a method to let you know you had kneaded the parts together uniformly. Wish I could recall the specific product, sorry.

Use a 4043 rod and TIG weld them back up

KGOHST is right.
It is the best method.  Not for a beginner though.

I have a welder shop here who regularly "draws" them back onto engines I get with broken and missing fins. It is just elbow grease with a file to shape them to match the others afterward.
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

If they are not to bad just file them down. My 750 engine had some broken fins. I spent about 2 1/2 hours and filed them down. It's been awhile now and I can't tell where they are at.  You can blend them in pretty good
