Shifter cover oil plug?
« on: April 14, 2013, 06:13:31 PM »
There's an oil passage in the crankcase that is covered by the bottom of the shifter cover (see photo).  I never seem to get the plug that goes in there in the oil seal kits I buy, and I've been getting by re-using the same one for a while now -- three or four dis-assemblies.  But this time I can't find the old one.  I bought a seal that I thought was the right one, but it's too large to go in the oil passage.  However, I noticed the gasket has a tab that completely covers the oil passage.  Does anyone know if the gasket can hold the pressure on its own, or does the plug need to be there.  Supplementary question:  If I need the plug, where can I get one?

Yes, the gasket can and will hold the oil pressure. The tab is supported by a matching protrusion on the cover.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Thanks, Scottly, I'll give that a try.
