Much more power than your 836? .what carb and carbs are you running in the 836?
 Is the Kawi stock?
Stock Z1 was rated at 82bhp, not sure what 836 is supposed to make but should be similar when running properly

I agree, Z was heavier as well.... ;)

What's the dry weight of the Z, my factory manual puts the kz1000 at 530lbs dry or 240kg

Z1 was at least 40 lbs lighter than later KZ (but it needed 23lbs of frame bracing)

The 836 runs great, have had it next to CR's K5 and he said I pulled from him.

Mick - c'mon over, we'll put em side by side and run em to see which one is quicker!

Love to.. ;D  Did you think that maybe the old Z has had some engine work Steve..?   After the first models were released the later Z's had better frames but went backwards on HP, pollution laws and all that crap.... On another note, i just love the gear drive bottom end on the old Kwaka's, wish Honda had went that way....

Back n those days my buddy cammed and big bored his GS1000,. And my 836 was fresh..and we switched bike.. He really liked the bottom end and midrange the 836 had.. His probably had more power..but really lacking down low.. I probably had the Webers on mine.. Everybody liked riding it..

I wood be pretty pissy if an 836 cant keep up to a stock zed..

Ha ha, that reminds me of the old Walt Disney shows that started with the statement, "Tall tales and true, from our Legendary Past" Frank. What's that saying? Oh I remember, "The older I get, the faster I was", ha ha! ;D

XS1100 was a well sorted motor
I remember dumping the clutch just off idle and romping on the throttle to show just how much bottom end torque they had plus how easy it was to 'flat track' them on pavement
You could easily ride them 'sideways' with rear wheel spinning
It was a real heavy bike to be doing such dumb #$%* though (I was a lot younger and faster then  ;))

I have vivid images burned in my brain of my buddy Radar, doing huge wheelies at Sturgis on his 11... He weighed about 155, but threw that thing around pretty good. Used to ride his 754 in the snow and dirt, at an impressively furious pace as well..
His 11 was #387 ish, and he had the first XT500 here as well.. Was popping small wheelies in the basement with it.. Halloween 1975..

Truth be told, I won't be racing either bike any time soon, the wild street racing days are long gone (funny how a wife and kid can change things).

Both bikes have more than adequate power and I value reliability over speed these days.

We called XS1100's "Elephants" here, they were a very quick bike in a straight line, but one of the worst handlers ever built, they almost made an early Z1 look good. They weighed around the same as a Goldwing, but with only 35mm long travel forks and horrible XS750 derived rear shocks, they were a nightmare in the twisties.

I did an advanced riders course back in the 1990's which culminated with a track day at the Phillip Island Raceway, and one of the guys brought his Elephant. I was only riding my old BMW R100RS which was definitely no racebike, but I kicked his arse in the corners, his old Yam wobbled and wallowed under it's own weight. The day wasn't that warm, but when we got back in the pits, he was white as a ghost and sweating profusely. We swapped bikes, and I came back in after a couple of laps, it really was that bad.

The engine was a gem though, and has evolved through the decades into the motivation for the current XJR1300. I had a ride on a Bimota YB5 once and it was great, but too race oriented and would kill my back on long rides, but the FJ1200 was a brilliant bike, and they're as cheap as chips here in Oz, so I might have to grab one while they're still cheap. Cheers, Terry. ;D

When i had the R100RT, i thought it handled far better than a CB 750.. But the euro riders I spoke too considered it mediocore, compared to other European bikes.

I never really rode with Z1s there was a group of them and KZ riders hung around together, and us lot on our 750s..one of us ended up on an 11.
The one Kawi I did ride with was in a Rickman.one day we run up to about 110 mph.. He said his speedo read about 125 ish. ..lol.. He was always talking about 130 mph runs.. I said its just your speedo..

I was at Amaroo Park in 1981 when Stephen Gall (Mister Motocross) and Ron Boulden came third Mick, XS1100's also came second and third behind the mighty GS1000 in 1979, but an XS1100 never won the 6 Hour. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Have a look at the attachment, Kawasaki 900's dominated that race for 4 years in a row, and should have won a 5th, but the BMW had a larger fuel tank, so could do a lot more laps between pit stops. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Ok, back to my Kaw that may not ever win a race!

Decided to go on a little ride last Sunday evening and got a half block and front end felt real odd, oh #$%*e, got a flat tire. No prob, was going slow and just turned back for the house. So, what to do, spend money repairing a tube/tire that is 16 years old? No way, ordered an Avon Roadrider after an hour or so of shopping. Considered Dunlop & Bridgestones but have those, you guys seem to rave on the Avons, so that was it. And a Bridgestone tube and rim strip. The old rim strip is hanging out, could that have caused the flat?
Came home from work and a tires and a couple boxes sitting on the front porch.
Better than Xmas!

New Avon, new repop seat from Japan via Z1parts, OEM bars, controls, clutch perch, levers, grips and hardware, a polished clutch cover to replace the dinged one on the bike and an oil pan. Better than Xmas, stuff that I need and really want!
The seat quality is amazing and comes with all hardware needed, great deal at $125. I also ordered a new DID rear rim to replace the goofy 16" HD on there, but will do that next month. Plan to have the new Avon mounted and balaced tomorrow and will be back on the road this weekend.

Yeah, i don't think any of us meant to hijack the thread but your find is such a great one it got all of us reminiscing about all the rivalries between brands "back in the day". Your bike is close to me because i own several Kaw dragbikes and i just wanted to show examples of how a street bike can evolve into something it was never designed for by the Japanese. I do have a rolling chassis i want to restomod for a street bike one day so seeing yours is an inspiration to consider a more stock appearing restoration instead.

Keep us posted on the progress.
