Never been much of a Kawasaki fan.
I know there were only 39 of the originals brought into Britain. First ones had all black engine and gold/black paint.
My sisters was second year, green/gold but different pattern to the later one

I have powder coating that matches the green /gold paint 100% perfectly.

Sorry i don't want to junk up your thread, but I though this might be helpful.  I came across this shop looking for a no longer available honda part on ebay.  Turns out they have a serious amount of kawasaki stuff as well.  Cheers

Thanks for the link - knows.  Anything Z related is appreciated. Been collecting more parts, but no time for working on the Z this weekend - The Rally is coming to town! Plan to be on the 550 cafe for the tight twisties tomorrow and the K4 836 on the high speed sweepers on Saturday.

Hey BlueTurbo - look at this oil pan trap door and let me know what you think.
I would prefer this style as I wouldn't have to drill a hole through the bottom of my new polished oil pan. Same concept...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dragbike-KZ-Z1-900-1000-Oil-Pan-w-Gate-Drag-Bike-900-1000-73-80-Z1R-Kawasaki-/380630835577?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item589f5da179#ht_49wt_888

This seller seems to have a lot of vintage drag bike parts.

Yes, attaching the trap door to the side is the right way to do it. Also modifying the 2 back oil traps will help to get oil to the pump faster.   ;)  The best thing to have is a deep sump oil pan, but they are like hens teeth and bring high $$$$.  I bought one back in the day for $50.oo at a swap meet. Should of kept it.   ::)

Mine will stay relatively stock, but thanks for the offer.

Thanks for the info Blue, I will go that route. I did see a deep sump oil pan, differant than the one you pictured, and the ugliest pan I've ever seen! [DIY modified?]

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kawasaki-KZ-Z1-900-1100-Turbo-Deep-Sump-Oil-Pan-Pump-Dragbike-/200919498863?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ec7bc406f&vxp=mtr#ht_1147wt_888

BTW - I took the Z on a 20 mile ride and just rode "normal", the oil light did not come on [was hard not to really hammer it!]
It has only done it twice and both times were under very fast acceleration so now I am quite sure that Jon is correct and is not a pump/switch issue.

No worries mate, I reckon I'd do the same, although a Dyna S is always a good unobtrusive performance improvement if that hasn't been done already. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Hey look what i found.......... Man that young man is one handsome S.O.B.   ;D    My first motorcycle.... 1978 KZ1000 LTD.  I traded a VW Baja for it.   ;)   It had 9,000 miles on it and everything on it was chrome plated.  Picture was taken in 1980, i was 21 years young and had a braided pony tail down my back.  Cut it all off 2 months later.    ;)

What do you mena by small tire?

Love the pics guys.  I also had a '78 [or 77?] 1000 LTD, bought it from my brother 'cause he wanted a Yammie 1100 Special. We took many trips together on those bikes, both were excellant. The 1100 was a little faster, topped out at 130mph and the Kaw 125. We would also do 1st gear rolling drag races out in the country - big fun.
He put some stupid little fairing on it for looks, it would cause him high speed wobbles in the turns and I'd pass him.

I don't think the XS1100 needed a stupid little fairing to make it all wobbly in turns Steve, they did that straight off the showroom floor! ;D

Some "Bikini" fairings caused high speed wobbles though, the Suzuki GS1000S fairing was a classic example, that's why there were som many GS1000S fairings hanging in owners garages, (including mine) taking them off actually made them more stable. BMW's R90S fairing was a similar design, and sadly, had a similar effect, but BMW riders were either braver, or didn't ride as fast (my best guess) because they mostly kept them on.

What exacerbated the problem on the R90S was the fitment of the factory panniers, I had both the R90S fairing and Krauser panniers on my first R100RS, and it developed one hell of a "Tank Slapper" at around 100 MPH. The fix (for me at least) was not to ride at 100 MPH............. ;D

Took "The Beast" out for a ride this afternoon after taking the wife out for a Mother's Day lunch.
Just rode "normal", not over 110 mph, oil light has not come on again but did not "launch" it.

Then after my nice 20 mile ride, decided to take my triple off to install the new instrument panel I bought last week.  Looks great although in the pic it may not [bad lighting].

When I changed out my handlebars, I found out one of the handlebar clamp bolts had stripped out at some time as one was drilled and through bolted. I just found an upper triple in great shape on eBay and ordered. I also need to order some gauge covers as one is scratched up pretty bad. Not sure whether to go with black or aftermarket chrome. Thoughts?

Well it's up to you of course Steve, it's your bike, but if I bought another Z1 I think I'd keep it looking stock nowadays, original bikes are worth more than bikes that have been modded, even though the mods might have improved them.

Chrome gauge covers aren't gonna really detract from anything though, so no biggie either way. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Yeah, good point Terry.  As I've stated earlier this will be going back to stock.  I have no plans to sell but you never know, and I'd like to at least get my investment back if I did have to sell. So now, waiting on parts...

Sounds like you may have found a new project.  She does look good though. You like the kz gauges or the cb ones better?

As far as the gauge faces, they look very similar and like them equally. The tach on the Z has a red light that illuminates when the brake levers are depressed.  Interesting but not necessary in my book.
I do like the cone shaped covers on the Z better, I'll snap a pic when I mount the new ones that I ordered.
