Yeah, good point Terry.  As I've stated earlier this will be going back to stock.  I have no plans to sell but you never know, and I'd like to at least get my investment back if I did have to sell. So now, waiting on parts...

Know all about waiting on parts. Four weeks now on the carburetor.  ::) You know me. Keep it as stock as possible.

Rebuild. New carburetors are rare as hens teeth.

Not yet. Still no gas in tank. No carburetor.

So when working on my petcock, I noticed it has two nipples but one of them capped off.
Looked at the fiche and it looks stock. Checked my carbs and do not see where another fuel line could be hooked up so am now thinking I do not have stock carbs.
They kinda look like smooth bores but don't have the square cast box on #4 or large drain plug underneath that I was told about on the KZ Rider forum.
You recognize these? I know MIC is Mikuni...

And heres a link to Z1 carb ID....

Steve-O, do they have accelerator pump?  Even, if you don't see one, they could be VM29 pumper carbs(not smoothbore).  Guys often plugged off the pump circuit and swapped float bowls.  These carbs are stock for the 78 and later bikes but bolt right on to any z900/1000...
If it works good, it looks good...

they are generally considered second only to smoothbores...as far as factory performance carbs from the era...correct carbs appear to be vm28's or vm26's as per your link   ...some po was upgrading

Did you clean the varnish off the exterior of the carbs to see if the seals are weeping a little? Looks like the one is weeping or has weeped a bit at some point. Mikunis are very good quality carburators.

I think Scottly has Mikunis on his Seeley and knows how to tune them properly if yours need any work. There is a thread about tuning either Mikunis or Weber carbs.
It is funny how Delatoro?spellin? And Weber and few others have similar carbs and camps of followers who claim superior performance of their version of very similar design in the car world.  When I first got my '66 Volvo 122S Amazon it had a Weber DGV downdraft carb instead of the stock twin SU carbs. While it performed OK it was jetted wrong and was known to perform poorly at higher speeds. It simply could not flow the air needed by the engine. I rebuilt the old worn SU HS6 carbs and rejetted them with SU carbs and put a 2" free flowing exhaust on the car and it transformed the car. Dropping a camshaft with a little more lift and duration woke up the power as well. Fun car and loved the sound of the twin SU carbs.

I think that is the case, possibly upgraded at some point. The bike was shown some love back in the day, custom paint and chrome bits are evidence of that. I believe the vm28's were stock for mine and in '76 the KZ900 had the vm26's.
No, have not cleaned them yet, maybe today, and may have to rejet when I install the original style 4 into 4, plan to order next month.

They're not smoothies Steve (float bowls are wrong) they're probably 28 mm Mikuni's off a Suzuki GS1000. From memory Kawasaki dropped the 28's after around 1974, and they went down to 26mm carbs for a little more torque, so the "fix" was to strap on a set of Suzy carbs. That's my guess, anyway. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Received some parts this week, a really nice powdered coated triple and side stand and some repop gauge covers...

Removed the old triple and guages and installed the new ones with all new hardware for the bar clamps and triple.

Also changed the upper [too long] brake line and flushed out all the old nasty fluid.
Front brake feels great, rear is so so and new shoes are on the list.

PO must have had some ape hangers on there as clutch cable is too long too, will order a new one.

The repop covers may not look good in the pic, but the paint work is very nice. All of Z1's parts are made in Japan.

Bolted on the powdercoated side stand, was happy to get rid on the chrome plated one. Didn't realize the chrome one was shorter than stock, prolly installed when the 16" rear wheel was installed. Looking for a centerstand replacement too.

Took it out for an 18 mile test ride, running great.

Next up:
Just ordered a new rear Avon tire and tube and need to order ss spokes for the new 18" DID rim I have on the shelf.

Don't sugar coat it Mick! They are ugly, no question. I'll be ordering original style four into four next month. They are a little pricey at $1400, but worth it in my book.

Yes, will be getting stock '75 paint eventually but low on the list.  Rear wheel/tire/brake is next, then pull ugly pipes, address a couple minor oil leaks [gaskets?], tidy up motor and replace a couple engine covers, one is damaged and one not stock.
And want to get the oil pan trap door installed that Jon suggested as the oil light came on again today when I launched it!
