Thanks John.  It does take time and all along I've said this is a long term "riding" restoration.
In hindsight, maybe a shouldn't have bought the K5 project ($750) but it was a great deal and if I sell it, should easily make $500 on the deal, money to go right to the new pipes.

If Kawi is reproducing exhaust I would go that route. Just adds more value. Depends on price difference of course.

Hi Stev-o, couple of grand may as well be couple of mill to me, I was attempting sarcasm but it doesn't come across on interwebs 
Because my sister had a Z1B I used to be very interested what was going on with them.
Story goes that Kawasaki didn't have a Z1 in their museum, brand new one built from spares wasn't for sale so they decided to make a brand new Z1 (because they could  )
There was enough interest to make I think 200 systems.
Could be they supplied tooling to an outside company for small batch production? (very much doubt Kawasaki doesn't have shares in the people making replacements?)
BTW, you did fit the bearing spacer into sprocket carrier? (I'm paranoid about the damn thing  )

Tried calling the Dealer, closed today.

Yes, def reinstalled the spacer, thanks for the heads up.

But, did not install the spacer, it was not on my service manual that I have downloaded, I do see it on this one though. Appears to be an alternate piece?

Part #17 on sprocket carrier (#16) always missing if you don't know about them
Without it the carrier bearing will collapse
 Part #31 is for parallel or aftermarket sprockets, the original has a 'step' (or the 'race kit sprocket)
Not sure if later models came with the spacer or a wider sprocket carrier, I have seen several where it's impossible to get chain line right, pre-internet it wasn't possible to get information very easy

Due to high peer pressure from you guys, I just ordered the stock style 4-4 exhaust system.
Plan to ride the Z this Saturday and then start removing the old exhaust.
Plan to do a few things to the bike while the exhaust is off, replace the old chrome centerstand, polish oil pan, and a deep cleaning of the lower case.

Looks like a win/win Steve, you ditched that ugly arsed F and got some sweet pipes for that Z Monster. Don't forget to budget a couple more bucks for some new 'Zorst gaskets mate, and if you can get it, some clear silicon exhaust sealant too, so those new pipes sound as good as they look! Ha! Knew you like that the F is gone, no regrets buying it, made a tidy bit of profit on it.
Ordered new gaskets, flanges, shims and mounting hardware too.

No, but I am hoping you are one!   
Unfortunately, the carbs are not stock, has the 26mm rather than the original 28's. I've read that this was a common mod, apparently the 28's could be difficult to tune.
I'm probably gonna have to rejet, don't you guys think?  Bike currently has Jardine[?] mufflers, which have no baffles.

The 28's shouldn't be that difficult to tune, there should be tuning information in the back of the service manual (including 'for racing')
They look way better with 4:4, going to be pretty awesome when finished

From what I remember from rebuilding a set of vm26's last summer they're pretty easy to work on, oem parts were a bit more on the pricey side than oem Honda kits for my pd's but still not bad. Plus there's jap made kits for the gaskets that that were pricey as hell. Kawi doesn't do a kit for them so I had to order individual orings and gaskets to rebuild mine.
