Steve, there is a clean 75 Z1 at a used dealership. Asking 19,999.00  I didn't think they were fetching that much. I can swing buy and get some pics for you.

It would want to be still in the crate for a 75 to be worth that much, he has probably seen an early Z go for similar money and thinks they are all worth that much, it is a car yard after all... ;)

Not much work on the bikes lately, been too busy at work and hate it.  I do have a nice Xmas present coming for the Kaw...

in the meantime, isnt this some good marketing?   [From that FB page, Mick] I'd buy one!

H1 ....good news, bad news..........

Good:  my Xmas present to myself arrived the other day, a bodywork set with absolutely beautiful paint work...

Bad:  went for a ride and the bike was running poorly and eventually died. Luckily, I was close to home. I checked the plugs, two looked fine, but the third [#2] had a closed up gap and debris stuffed in around the insulator. I've put 100 mies on the bike since I've had it and the plugs were replaced about 50 miles or so ago, so I know I did not get it like that. I changed the plugs and kicked it over a few times, checked #2 and no sign that piston is hitting the plug....odd. I started it but turned it off, obviously something is obviously wrong.
Thoughts?

Is the debris metallic and fused to the plug? :o

Hard to tell from your out of focus photo but the debris does look like metal, which leads to bad thoughts...Larry

Yes, appears to be metal fused to the plug.  Sorry for the bad pic, was difficult to get a good one.  No, I don't have a bore scope, thought about buying one, but will pull the head tomorrow.

Yes....good news is I don't need a new cam or valve job!

Bad news is, I need nearly everything else. Not really, but I've decided to bite the bullet and rebuild the motor, not exactly cheap but I plan to keep this bike and want a solid reliable rider.
Each cylinder has it's own head and they come off easy with the motor in the frame.

The #1 and 3 look fine, but 2 has some debris build up.

It appears that it has run lean and the top of the piston has detonated.
Look closely at the edge of the piston at 7:00...

Here is #3 head and piston...doesnt it look like the head gasket was leaking? Head bolts on #2 & 3 came off much easier than #1.

After much research on the Kaw Triples Forum, this is a common failure to bikes that have sat for awhile.
The rubber crank seals dry out and crack allowing air in and the motor to run lean, and cause failure. Mine could have been worse.
Funny thing is, I'm not bummed out about it. I bought it as a non-running project bike, that is always a gamble. And it's not a Honda...ha!

Stopped by my buddies yesterday, he has agreed to help me pull the motor and split the cases. He's an ex-Honda tech and has a proper workshop, I'll bring the bike there, we plan to start next week. [My half of the garage is like a greenhouse right now, it's in the 30's outside and the wife has moved her plants inside so they dont freeze]

So the crank needs to be rebuilt, proper tools are a must. I've found and been in contact with an expert Triples crank rebuilder in MD, I'll be shipping him the crank in a week or two.

I've measured the bores, they are approx 59.5mm, which is standard. I'm leaning towards Wossner piston kits, +.5mm  [$350]. I know a local, trusted shop that will bore them at $50 a hole. Apparently Wiseco's raise the compression which isnt necessarily a good thing on these bikes with the gas that is available here [10% ethenol unleaded].

So that's where I am, I've bit off a mouthful!

Bit of a shame Steve but the bike is so nice it sure is worth  putting money into it.  the explanation about the seals  makes sense but it still is a downer.  Good thing is two strokes are simple to rebuild....Larry

I bought it right, so the cost of a motor rebuild wont hurt me. The feeling of riding this bike with a properly running motor will be worth it!

It is! And that other Kawasaki too.  But no riding here, winter has hit, cold and wet for the next few days.

In the long run you will be happy to have it all sorted out proper and knowing a rebuilt crank is in there will be key. Old multi cylinder two strokes are a big gamble but a rebuild with receipts will definitely increase its value by probably more than the cost, kind of like a new kitchen or bath to a house.

You think this is possible on our old Honda's as well? I've been having a hell of a time trying to find where air is getting into my 550 and causing it to run lean (it sat for 22 years before I got it started up again).
