No progress on the bath remodel so back to the H1:

Received a much welcomed call from the shop yesterday, the boring was complete.

Knocked off work early and headed up there. This guy has a shop behind his home and there are bikes everywhere! This is only about a quarter of them but I saw a familiar one...

Not wanting to act like a tourist, I did get one pic of his drag bike and asked a few questions.  It's a Kaw, of course, bored out to 1200cc [resleeved]. They had it on the track last Sunday, with a pro rider, it did sub 9 sec at 156 in the quarter, pretty wicked!

I had the cylinders and heads bead blasted, cylinders bored +.5mm and the ports chamfered, all in it was $270, sounds fair in my book.

The Wiseco pistons look amazing.  They are forged, have the coating on the skirt and also on the inside.  Not cheap but not crazy expensive, I could have gone the cheap ebay pistons but want to do this one right. The piston kits include piston, rings and wrist pins and clips.  No wrist pin bearing, but I purchased Wiseco's as well, as the center cyl bearing looked bad. Pics:

The crank rebuilding is complete and is being shipped back to me.  Should receive it any day and plan to start reassembly next week.

Looks good...
That should keep you out of trouble for a few hours, or in trouble if you are suppose to be working on the bathroom, I have a project I'm suppose to be working on so, off I go...not on SOHC/4s...later!
Congrats on getting some good progress, your wallet is much lighter I'm sure...

It will be a much happier engine than when it left the showroom floor.  8)
Be careful with that right wrist when you get it all back together.

That will be the toughest part.  But the plan is to be easy on it for the first 100 mikes or so.

The local UPS driver paid a visit today, could not wait to get the box open.

I've been impatiently waiting on this...

New bearings and seals, then balanced.  I'll be headed to my buddy's shop tomorrow and plan to get this thing back together in the next week or so.
Charlie Smith did a great job and relatively quick too.

I've already purchased the gasket and seal kit, so I should have everything I need.

Ha!  If the case was in my garage, I prolly would be.  My buddy has a proper shop and tools for an engine rebuild so I will be there tomorrow.  Patience Grasshopper, this has to be done right.

You know I am!
These are the original OEM rods, they checked out ok.  Motor only has 4500 miles, as far as I know.

Awesome thread Steve!

Thanks Nils.  Enjoyed looking at your H2 pics, consider starting a thread here in the "other bikes" section, lots of Kaw fans around here!  And the Triples forum is pretty lame.

Ya, I have spent a bit of time there and it did not remind me of here, let's say :-).

I'll have more to post on the H2 next week, with luck. Thanks Steve.

Nice progress Stev-o!  Too bad Cruzinimage doesn't sell H1 pistons, right!?  $400 is steep, but Wiseco's are nice.

Actually, Cruzin does sell H1 pistons but AFAIK, they are not proven to be reliable in the Kaw.
Plus, the Wiseco's are forged [believe Cruzin's are cast] and Wiseco's come with a shirt coating to aid break-in.
This is worth the extra $200 to me.

I heard from a few sources over the years that forged pistons need the engine warmed up fully before 'wailing' on them.. because they expand more when heated and the cylinders need more clearance to compensate for that expansion.I had .060in. over Wiseco's in my 75' RD350 and she wanted more warm-up before I could get top performance. The oem type cast pistons don't have as much expansion so they can run tighter clearances.

Ok, I'm feeling like I'm not progressing at an acceptable pace and blew my goal of getting the motor together by the end of Feb.

So, feeling guilty, I guess I owe you guys an explanation.  My '06 Tacoma developed a motor knock a couple weeks back, it has 197,000 trouble-free miles.  I've been telling the wife for the last few months that it may be time to trade.  It was still running but did stall once and did not want to start back up right away, but did after about 15 min, but sounded horrible and the oil light came on. I was right by a shop and wheeled it in. They confirmed my fears, motor suffered loss of oil pressure and was doomed. The oil pan was pulled and was full of metal.

Facing an expensive motor repair, I decided to sell it, put an ad on Craigs and was not prepared for the response I received!
About 25 phone calls and texts within 2 hours of posting the ad.
Obviously I listed it too low, but $5200 for a 9 year old truck with 197K needing a major engine repair seemed fair to me?
Met the first guy who called the following day [and he hounded me by calls and text], he brought cash and hauled the truck off. I had another guy waiting in the wings if the first deal fell though.
In the mean time I was scrambling to find another truck, and did, although it was in Houston, 150 miles away.
So, between selling and buying a truck, I lost some valuable motor rebuild time but was something I had to do, since it's my commuter work vehicle.
The "new" Tacoma looks familiar, but in better condition and only 32K miles.
I'm not a "truck guy" but this model fits mt needs, V6 4.0L motor has plenty of power and the medium size of the truck actually handles quite well.

So, theres my excuse!

I always use good name brand oil.

But that brings up a question:

What is the best oil to use in a Tacoma??!
