Aluminium Tubing
« on: July 26, 2006, 05:32:17 AM »
Dose anyone know where I can find rectangular aluminium tubing suitable for making an intake manifold? It's got to be in the neighborhood of 2 3/8" x 1 1/2" with round corners.

...do a google search on aluminum tubing...there are a couple of places you can buy online.  I would think you'd want to go with solid stock and then bore/mill the manifold...whats your plan?

Well to tell the Truth it's for a guy here at work. He's trying to replicate or make his own high performance intake runners and air box for (and I apologise for this) Eagle Talon (gearheads are gearheads, be it two wheels, four wheels or more). He's going with a turbo and intercooler. I've did a few searches and haven't come up with anything suitable. The manifold plate that he's using has 2 3/8" x 1 1/2" openings with roughly 11/32" radius corners that must match. I'll try to get a photo or something to post of what it looks like.

You could always get some flat stock/sheet and TIG up the runners. When I was driving VWs, I had a buddy that made a manifold and airbox for his charged Jetta. I think he ended up fabricating his own runners....couldnt find tubing that matched the ports.

I got the aluminum for him  ;D   Thats my profession unfortunately........I beat it, bang it, weld it, buff it, and fabricate it into doors for ambulances every day.  ::)

Oh yes I absolutely agree, dollars is the key. I myself work as a receiving supervise in a machine shoppe. We've got CNC machines, Brown and Sharp single spindle, and Cone-o-matic multi spindle, (originally screw machines but we make every thing but screws) we also have more modern Euroturn multi spindle machines. We have many suppliers we do business with from big names like Central Steel on down to the little specialty suppliers and without having something custom made I just can't find it. Extrutions are just a matter of having the correct die to make the shape you want. I've been a four wheeled gearhead since I saw my first race at US 30 Drag Strip in 1968. I've thumbed through many a Hot Rod magazine since then and seen the progress of racer built manifolds over the years. With all the aftermarket manufacturers out there now, I guess I just figured something to match an intake port would be an of the shelf item from somebody now days. My friend did get a hold of some Sharp corner rectangular tube though. He's going to attempt to tig in some round stock to the ID then radius the inside to match that of the manifold plate, then round off the 90 deg corner OD. In any case I wish him luck, an thanks for the help. If anyone else has any bright ideas I'd be more than happy to hear from them.                       Patrick

I got the aluminum for him
Thanks KC, finding raw material like rounds, sheet, hex, flat, or tube isn't a problem. Special shapes are expensive, especially if they have to make a die for you. The idea is my friend is trying to make $900-$1000 silk purse from a $100-$200 sows ear. I sure appreciate the offer and info KC. I'll let you all know if it goes or blows.
