Does anyone know a good painter?
« on: April 17, 2013, 04:52:49 AM »
I'm thinking about having my 69 CB750 K0 repainted. I believe that the tank, headlight bucket and ears are the original Candy Ruby Red, but the side covers are reproductions and a shade off. The tank also has several chips and scrapes. I want to re-paint everything back to the original color. Does anyone have a good painter that they would recommend?
Thanks!

I know a guy down here in Rock Hill, but he's in the process of moving his business and probably won't be taking in any new work until June-ish.
PM me for details if interested.

The closer the better, but distance isn't a problem. I can disassemble the parts and ship them to his shop.

I think it would be a lot better to find one in driving distance. You need to see there work in person and discuss the details. Unless the painter is well known in the USA. You are looking at $500. for a good stock job with painted stripes instead of decals or decals with clear coat on top to $1500. and up for custom work. Any shade tree job can be had for $300. or less. IMO

There are some restoration painters on the forum here.    Marble motors for one. The shade tree painter here says. The 69 may be worth a professional job.

Mark Byrd
mark8149@yahoo.com
West Virginia

He did an amazing job on the tank and side cover for my 73. He includes all the tank decals and body work and plastic welding. It's about a 2 month turn around but most definately worth the wait. For $100 extra he cleans out your tank.  He even restored my tank badges.

I realize that this post about Marble Motors is very old but if anyone is thinking of having Randy Marble paint parts - do not consider it at all. It took him over three months to "paint" a gas tank, two side covers, two fenders and a headlight cover and it cost well over a grand $$$. He painted the outside of the gas tank without even cleaning the inside of the tank that had obvious evidence of rust. They didn't even bother to ask if they should clean the tank first and only a complete idiot would paint a tank and not clean or ask to clean the tank before painting the outside of the tank. I could go on and on, but, I DO NOT recommend using Randy Marble for any painting.

If you are in NC, I used to work for some painters near Rockingham who painted race cars and drag bikes and such. I also worked for a really good and reasonable painter in Pine Bluff, NC. named Irving Williams at Williams Body shop. I learned a lot there as a kid  and he is a great guy. If you are near there, look him up and tell him Aaron sent you.

Thanks guys.  I walked away from painting (for the time being) to get back into radio which I had done for 30 years.  It was difficult to get enough people to accept that real high-quality paint jobs cost anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000 for a better then factory restoration.  The materials alone cost around $500, and 30-40 hrs. or more to do them.  So you can see how much someone like me was netting for doing these types of paint jobs.

I do miss it, though.

Given a K0, definately get it to a pro who's done these before, get's the right paint and process down. And wouldn't your airbox also need painting?

BTW - I ended buying a newly painted entire body set on ebay for less than I planned to pay for a paint job...

If you can use a spray can you should check into the spray can kit from VMR. I did my Flake Apricot red 75 in the pic myself.
Prep work(primer and sanding) is the key. I have had nothing but great compliments on my finish.
