Ignition Switch Glitch

Lately the connector from the On/Off/Ignition to the headlight basket nightmare of wiring has gotten a bit dodgey (power cuts out, fiddle with it and it comes back on). Short of replacing the connector, any ideas of how to remedy the problem? My throttle cables run behind it and seem to contribute to the problem by pushing on the connector, so I'll re-route them (as soon as I dig up the will to contort my fingers to undo them from the carbs), but that won't solve the problem. It's a '78 550K.

First check, clean, and recrimp (if needed) all your connections.  If that doesn't do it you may want to look deeper into the switch.  I had the whole bottom plastic retainer loosen up so the contacts weren't fully touching.

If you determine it is all in the switch you can get rebuild kits, and if that doesn't work entire switch.  I got a new Honda switch and it was money well spent.

Where did you get your ignition switch?  And what about the key?  I need to keep the same key, for I use the steering lock and seat lock. '72 CB 350F if it matters.

I had to hot wire the bike to get to work this morning. :)
So I need a work around, but if I cannot fix the internals of the ignition, I will need a source for a new one.

You can still get genuine Honda contact assemblies. Much cheaper than a whole new switch. Plus, far better than aftermarket ones that don't quite fit properly.

My '78 550 had the same issue. Carefully remove the white cover over the switch back and remove the terminal piece. Be careful as the contactor has two spring-loaded balls that ride in detents. Thoroughly clean all the contacts and re-stake the copper rivets that hold the terminals in place. This should make it reliable.

An automotive ign. switch is another idea.
That way you can start your bike with a turn of the key, just like your car.
Another winter project for me... ;)

I had a similar problem. I turned out that the white plastic base at the bottom of the ignition switch was loose and would no longer fit correctly (there are three tabs that lock the plastic into the base of the switch and mine wear worn). Parts & More sells the plastic base cover for $3, a switch repair kit that includes the base and switch mechanism for $12 and an entire switch for $22. I bought the base switch cover and problem fixed.
