I started keeping track initially, then stopped. My theory as to how much you can invest in, say a 750, goes like this. When they first came out, they were around $1400. Out of curiosity, I went to one of those inflation conversion sites to see what that would be in today's $$'s. I seem to recall that was in the $7-8,000 range. So, we should be guilt-free up to that point anyway.  ;)

i like your thinking.  also, i've always reasoned that my wife's car cost us about $7,000 more than mine (honda hybrid/ford focus) so i have $7,000 in vehicle credit that i can use any way i like.

You know what I think? I don't think we would have it any other way because we love these bikes so it doesn't really matter how much they cost. Its kinda like loving a woman. You can go into heavy ass debt to put a big rock on her finger but its more than worth it just to see her walking around glowing over it!!!!!(Know what I mean???)

Then they run off with yer best mate :'( :'( :'(

yeah, i never mind seeing my best mate riding my bike.  and my bike doesn't get too jealous when i ride his.  hell, sometimes i'll ride 2 or 3 of my mates' bikes in a single afternoon

I probably shouldn't tally this up, but what the hay.
Bike $5.00
GL front end - $100
Chain and Sprockets - $160
Tires - $160
Used 4-1 Exhaust - $50 (25 for the bikes, 25 for the S&H)
Headlight - $20

Now the major part of all this was the rent fees for using my buddies garage. Beer.  But d*mnit, it makes it all worth while, when the better half (so she tells me) wants to ride my bike instead of her '06 Sportster, "Because it's more fun".  That my friends is the best thing in the world, when she wants to sell her bike and by one just like mine.

Of course there's a story...  The guy only wanted a dollar for it, but I felt generous and gave him 5.

I had a GS500 and someone wanted it more than me.  A guy I used to ride w/ had a 76 CB750 sitting in the garage that hadn't run for acouple of years and he new how much I like to work on bikes, so in his moment of weakness and feeling sorry for me, he made me an offer I couldn't refuse. :)

I've jammed all my receipts into a shoebox with big letters stenciled on top:

"DO NOT TOTAL UP!  EVER."

That works for me.

You know what's wrong with the premise that started this thread? It's the idea that you can actually "invest" in a motorcycle. New or old--a motorcyle gulps down money that you'll never see again. In comparison, "investing" is when I buy a lottery ticket!
