HOW THE HELL DO YOU GET TO THE INSIDE PLUGS ???
« on: July 26, 2006, 10:41:34 AM »
yO ,

I foulded my plugs out wth my new V-Stacks (Some major re-jetting is in order), and was going to swap them out with some new ones, untill I hit a snag. I got the outter two plugs with no issues. I bought this nifty "special tool" which consists of a long tube, with a flat "handle" that really got them outta the head quiet easily (with the help of some good ol WD40).

1st Question :
How do I attack the middle 2 plugs ? Do I have to remove th tank, and come in from the top ? Do I need to get some sorta swivel ratchet thing going on to get to them ? Of course I dont have a socket that fits these plugs, so I will have to go get one, and a swivel (mine snapped a few weeks back)...

2nd Queston :
I got my MAC 4 into 1 exhaust today.  :D
Should I bother putting it on if I dont plan to re-jet till the winter?
I mean , will the bike run with the stock jetting AND a 4 into 1 with no baffle ?
I just wanna hear what it sounds like so bad..... ;D But if the bike is gonna mis/pop/cry/#$%* then I will wait untill I jet the thing properly....

?

Question 1:
18mm deep socket, a swivel, small extention & ratchet should work.

Question 2:
For me when it comes to bikes, it's kind of like when the wife buys new clothes and wants to wear them right away.  So my new parts go on as soon as I can possibly get them on there.

Not sure on the jetting but myself I'd pop her on there and find out.  What's the worst that can happen?  At least you'll know if you need to re-jet.  Just my 2 cents.

hey PT, it's not too bad but you need the stock spark tool, or at least one that is similar - just the metal tube with the hole for the simple bar stock steel handle...

you slip the "wrench" part in there, but make sure you set it on the plug so that the handle hole is aimed to where you can get a good 1/4 turn on the thing before it hits the down tube or the cam cover...

once you break the seal on it you can finger twist it the rest of the way out...

good luck!

That's kinda what I was thinking. I am outta here (work) for the day  ;D and I am gonne go tear into my bike. As usuall I will post pics, and my results...

This is the 'special tool" which I said I am the owner of. I used it like a champ to get the outside plugs out, and was just unsure of how to get it in for the inside ones, but u said it can be done.
Do I need to pop the tank off to get the "metal tube" on the plugs ??

i didn't have to do that...i just angled it in underneath - not easy, to be sure, but not all that hard - you have to go in in between the two downtubes maybe...

Like CBJ said, stock tool or something similar.  It takes a bit of practice not to burn your hands up while doing it.

I wouldn't run the bike on the road without rejetting for the open pipe.  BTW, I idled mine for a few seconds the other day without the baffle (MAC 4-1) and it sounded just like my buddy's Chevelle SS396!

Good luck!

I have to remove my tank to get to the inside plugs.  There is just no room.  Of course, I have a 400, so a 750 is probably different.

Yeah I don't think I could stand more than a few minutes of staring at an uninstalled exhaust.  The anticipation would kill me.

I use 1/4" drive swivel/extension/ratchet with a 3/8" adaptor on the 18mm socket.

I have found a 3/8" drive swivel joint on a medium length extension will reach just fine.  I have noticed in the past it is easy to bend the little screw type connector on the end of the spark plug, and found a fix.  Remember that little screw on piece that you usually throw away because you aren't using car-style spark connectors?  Put it on the spark plug before removing it, and you stand much less chance of bending the connector end of the spark plug itself.

i usually drop the socket onto the plug then slip a universal joint (3/8" drive) and a short extension. just be careful when re installing them, i would advise using your fingers until they are snug and then torquing them after. the reason i say that is that the PO of my bike crossthreaded one of them and one day a spark plug ejected and i had to pull the motor and use a timesert to fix the hole.

hmp - it took me a good 20 minutes one day to get that dad-blasted thing even started...squatting down in the 100+ heat next to a hot engine twisting and twisting and twisting (and cursing) ...and then backing it back out when i felt it start to cross up... :P

i found a spark plug spanner from a VTR1000 works a treat, they have the rubber thing inside to grab the plug out, and a long extension that you can get too with a 10mm ratchet spanner, hope this helps.... peace

I used a thin walled 18mm socket with a swivel attachment, or use the honda tool kit socket. either way works for me.

Don't worry about the backup Bill, should be more worried about having a tow-strap to follow your Mopars around with, so when they crap-out you can get them home.. ;D

A good trick for getting your plugs back in without possibly crossthreading (and I do this on any spark plug....especialy hard to get at situations)..........Get a piece of 3/8 fuel line and slip over the plug.It bends to however you need and can be cut to whatever length you need.
Oh....and by the way......I always loved the sound of my 69' SS396 exhaust. It really sounded the best when I was blowin' the doors off of them Dodges!!!!! (pic in my gallery)

Big block Chevy's do sound good and by the way, my running buddy had a stock 67' Coronet R/T that had no problem with the Chevys. I imagine that if you'll check, you'll find stories going back and forth on who and what would beat who. Back in the late 60's I blew the doors off of an Olds 442 with a 66' Charger sporting a 4 barrel 383/4sp/posi and it was pure stock. We all have our stories.
