Route 66 Seat Covers
« on: April 22, 2013, 07:45:13 AM »
Has anyone ever tried these guys out?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-CB500-Seat-Cover-1971-1972-1973-1974-Four-CB-500-ST-PS-DRAWSTRING-/171021612875?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27d1aeb74b&vxp=mtr

I like that they can do the covers in a variety of colors, and I was wondering if anyone has every had some experience with them.

Thanks!

Case of the Mondays?  :P

I was thinking the saddle brown leather would go well with my bike  8) For my cars though, black on black always.

I'd love to see some pics of them in an someones actual installation. I worry they are much looser than the ebay pic.

Not a case of the Monday's but a case of the Exile Choppers.  The owner of that company say's that his customers can get a chopper in any color they like, as long as its black.  I always laughed at that.  Now I find that I apply it to some things, like seats on a bike.  I only like black with the rare exception of an old Honda Dream with a white seat.  They look nice but I don't know how you would keep it clean.  Somethings should just be black.

By the way that last post is just my opinion.  Anyone can put any color seat they want on their bike.  I respect ones right to choose, I just differ in opinion.

Hey Mo.  I have a seat cover on my 550 from that seller.  I got it like 4 or 5 yrs ago....so they may be different now, but they appear to be made the same way as what the pic shows.  My seat is black with white (or is it silver?) lettering on the back.  It was a seat cover only....no chrome strip around the bottom.

The vinyl material is very thick and durable....much thicker than the stock material.  That is either a plus or a negative depending on what you are looking for.  It does not necessarily look stock because there is no pattern heat pressed into the top surface like the original, and the vinyl is a bit glossier than the original....but all in all, it has held up well and still looks new all this time later.  As I recall, it came with a new seat strap made of the same material, but it was not reinforced like the original.  I ended up using my original seat strap after cleaning it up a bit and it matches well enough to look good.  The cover fit well and I had no trouble installing it.  Rather than using the method they suggest of poking the little sharp points through the cover underneath, I used lots of short self-drilling screws and washers and essentially screwed it to the underneath of the pan as I pulled it tight.  This made it much more secure and kept it from getting any wrinkles.

I can snap a pic of mine if you want to see it....but it looks pretty much like the pic in the ad.  Hope that helps.

Edit:  I did find a couple of pics that I had here at work.  Not necessarily of just the seat, but does show the material/texture pretty acurately....

I believe Henry Ford coined that phrase about the Model T 8)

Hahaha Magilla, I know you were being goofy  8) Normally, I agree with you about all black.

Indy, thanks for that awesome write up and pictures! That is exactly the information I was looking for. I was thinking that brown would go well with my build, and keeping the stock seat was something I wanted to retain.

Would you say it is more slippery? i.e, do you find your ass sliding off the thing all the time  :P

I have had no ass-slippage issues.   :)

As far as reputation it looks as though they only do seats and they have sold almost 19000 of them on Ebay. That should say something. They sold 519 last month and had 3 negative and 6 neutral feed backs.

The seats do look great although I wish the heat-stamped pattern was used. From Powderman's statistics, they look pretty reputable. Go for it Mo!  :D

I went through an eBay seller called "allseatcovers" for my CB750 this winter.  I was fairly pleased with the quality.  I didn't get it stretched as tight as the original... I chocked most of that up to old foam, lack of skill recovering on my part, and maybe some stitching that could be slightly tougher.  Mine looks pretty nice though and has held up fine.  I used some upholstry glue to hold it on partially and then picked up some chrome trim from the local O'Rielley auto parts store to go around the bottom.  It came out very nice and for about the same price.  It also has a take on the original waffle pattern in the seat as well as the Honda logo on back.  I'll see about posting a picture.
