blowing main fuses
« on: July 26, 2006, 01:55:10 PM »
So I have been trying to hook up my blinkers and I keep blowing the main fuse when the key is turned on or the signal switch is used.  I am assuming that I have a short somewhere or a bad wire of some kind but I don't know where.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to find this or what some possible causes would be?  I'm scratching my head and I'm almost out of 15A fuses ;D

I also can't seem to get the tail light to work.  The brake light works fine and the bulb appears to be ok since I have tried two tail lights.

Gawd I hate wiring turn signals.  For sore reason it always seems to be more of a pain than it should be (for me at least).

I actually had the same problem when I wired my bike a while back (turn signal blowing fuse and tail light not working).  For me it was a couple of wires connected wrong in the headlight bucket.  I was reinstalling a (fairly) stock wirering harness that had been totally removed while I built the bike so it was just a question of making some incorrect connections when I hooked thing back up.

It was just a matter of re-checking the wire colors that were connected to each other behind the headlight.  Being a little color blind can be a real pain at times  ;D >:(  luckily the wife is not afflicted with this problem so I find her to be very handy in these situations.

i am having this very same problem. the tail light didnt work, brake light did. signals did. went out for a ride noticed mid ride the signals stopped working (popped a fuse) replaced the fuse and the taillight was working, brake light still worked, but the signals all light up steady(no blinking) only when the switch is in neutral. turn the switch left. left side shuts off(no blinking) same on the right. checked over all the obvious spots. did you ever sort out your trip? any tips? thanks.

had the same problem although it wasn't to the point of blowing the main fuse.  What I ended up having to do was as simple as taking the frame ground off and cleaning the contact surfaces.  It was a frustrating couple days to figure something this easy out.  One day I had turn signals, no tail light.  Next tail light no turn signals or the front signals would work but not the back, etc.  Spent two days chasing a short that didn't exist.
