78 Super Sport...Building a Coffee Shop!
« on: April 26, 2013, 06:42:40 AM »
Well, I figured I would start my project thread today. I'm looking at some small projects and repairs today and this weekend.

To recap, I bought a 78 CB750 Super Sport last Saturday. I got it from a guy at work for 500$. Well with a little drive way wrenching, we took the seemingly bad Dyna S ignition off and put on the old points plate. Lo and behold, she started right up!

From what I can gather it's running lean... I'm basing this off a rough to non-existent idle without the choke, and the backfiring when decelerating. I am thinking of trying to adjust the mix screws (correct term?) on the carbs, and adjusting the throttle set as well. The bike is running pods with a 4 into 1 exhaust with no baffle, I know this changes the mix I need.

Does this sound like a good place to start?

Also, can someone explain the best way to post pictures from a Galaxy S 3? I'm doing all my posting from my phone, I don't have the internet. Thanks!!

The idle mixture screws only have a limited ability to affect the mixture. To adjust for the pods and the exhaust you are going to need to change the jets.

However, before you do that, which requires pulling the carbs, carefully inspect the rubber boots that connect the carbs to the manifold.

Thanks, I'm not 100% sure what size jets are in it. I'm told by the PO that they were rejetted and rebuilt last year, but I will probably end up pulling and cleaning them myself to know for sure.

I will check the boots when I get off work. I saw them earlier as I was pulling the pods off, didn't seem to be any visible wear or damage, but I'll give them a thourough once over!

I did get the throttle cables off and lubed, with them and the pods off, I noticed that the butterflies were wide open and closed when the choke is applied. Is that normal? I would have thought it would be the other way around.

Yes. The butterfly is the choke, open is off, closed is on.
