Has Anyone Used Brooks Bar Tape?
« on: April 21, 2013, 05:08:50 PM »
Hey

I was wondering if any of you guys have used Brooks Bar Tape on your grips. It looks amazing and comfy on the hands. I'm considering getting some and then reupholstering in the same color as the grips just too make the bike mesh better.

It's originally for Pedal Bikes, but looks pretty good on the bike.

Here is an example. Looks sweet, but would it stay together over time.

As an avid cyclist, I'd say that it would not be permemant.  I haven't used that type of handlebar tape, but I've used some other high end stuff and it gradually peels over time.  The adhesive is simply not that strong at all.  It would make a comfortable grip, but it is in it's nature to wear somewhat quickly, and I'd assume the wind at speed on a motorcycle would contribute greatly there.  I'd imagine you'd get enough tape in one road bike serving to do it 2 or 3 times over though.

You probably could find some 'vintage' looking leather from some used golf clubs  ;D

I'm really liking the used golf clubs idea flybox1... I think I might cruise the local craigslist and maybe snag a set!

I looked at the Deda grip tape Mo, I might have to order up a set and maybe see how long they would hold up. I'd probably just wrap them around around a pair of plain black grips with the waffles cut out from Dennis Kirk.

Reganator, maybe that'll keep the grips looking fresh if I have too change them every year.. In Minnesota here, we can only ride for 6 months anyway! So I don't think I'd be too upset about changing them that often.

might have to buy two, but here's why they might be a good option.
they have an adhesive backing on them already
the edges are tapered - when you overlap the edges it lays flat, no 'overlap bump'
one end is tapered to about 4mm wide - you can start or end your wrap with the tapered end, for that finished look.

Absolutely on changing them as needed.  You do it on a bicycle, I don't see why it would be that big a problem on a motorcycle.  I guess the only thing I'd wonder about is how long it would last in higher wind and with more twisting and the such like it would receive on the throttle.  The adhesive is simply not that good... in fact, you might want to sticky it up on your throttle somehow so it isn't allowing it to slip in your hand as it wears, and I'd replace at the first sign of it coming loose.  You are correct though, it's made to be very wearable and fairly low cost so I don't see any reason not to try it.
