CB550 stretch - aka: Kandy"
« on: November 20, 2013, 08:02:11 AM »
So I happened across 2 74 cb550's, one was a complete roller, ready to ride (after the carbs were cleaned) and the other was completely stripped, bagged and tagged. I figured "Hey...this one is already down to the frame...Let's cut 'er!!". Already planning on resto'ing the first one, we dug into the second one with a cutter, torch and welder. I had an idea for a frame style that was different, so I grabbed the tube, bender, welder, angle finders, protractors, pen and paper and went to town...I wish I had taken more pics, but I usually had my hands full.

The motor is getting pulled back out in a month or so for powder coating...I just threw it in cos I honestly got tired and impatient. So we threw it in, tuned it quick, and fired her up.

The original motor was destroyed beyond repair...seems someone tried jamming in an oversized spark plug and totally bent the intake valve seat into a D shape. Then along comes a third...for a decent price, with a good running motor.

Call me a "parts harvester" if you will...but I'm the guy who buys up old, wrecked, blown up, rotted cb550's so that you guys can have the parts for a decent price...Merry Christmas!!

Jay - what spec tubing did you use for the new extension? Not for nothing, you obviously are experienced welder, but I'd strongly suggest you weld in the slugged and riveted sections of the front of huge frame where factory connections are made. Looks like you might also want a gusset or brace along the swing arm extension to prevent any deflection.

Interesting modification direction for a CB in the current world of cafés and bobbers.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis

Fab skills? Who? Me? Hell no...I just look at something, and say "Yannowhat? That'd look cool if it were done this way"...

The motor is getting pulled in a month or so, after the bugs are worked out, and fully powder coated. Then comes the fun part...buying all new chrome or stainless fasteners...so far the total cost of the build is:

$550 for the first 2 bikes.
$40 for the pipe
$375 for the 3rd bike (motor/exhaust donor)
$65 chain
$40 for the powder
$800 in beer to keep the guys happy...

Subscribed. The pictures don't do the copper powder justice. I mean, the pictures look amazing and all but in person it looks FRIGGIN' amazing.

Some progress today....got the sissy bar and rear fender mounted. Also got some work on the 2 1/2 yr long Shovelhead project done as well...took advantage of the shop being closed to work in quiet. Unfortunately,  that was the same idea as everyone else, so the shop was still buzzing with activity...
