CB400F Carburetor Thorttle Cam Split After Electroplating
« on: April 28, 2013, 07:05:11 AM »
Hi guys,

So I drilled out the retaining pin on a spare CB400F carb rack and removed the throttle cam and sent it off to get electroplated.

I went to put it back together and it fell to pieces on me!

It appears the electroplating process has eroded the rivets that hold the cam that the push/pull throttle cables connect to. It's a two part thing which is under a bit of stress, so I want to 'fix it' correctly whilst respecting originality. Obviously I could just bolt them back together but I want to do it the 'right' way.

Has this happened to anyone else and/or can you tell me how Honda originally fixed these two pieces together?

Thanks,
Rick.

Nobody? Surely I can't be the first person this has happened too?

Duck tape.

Just kidding.  That's weird... I'm wondering why it would have come apart... don't they put the parts in some kind of acid when they electro plate them?  Maybe it didn't like the rivets... I dunno... frankly if it were me I'd try to find new or take it up to my friend's place to get tacked on with a tig welder.  Maybe even try JB weld in a pinch.  I don't think that thing would see all that much direct stress, or at least that much in the downward direction onto the joint between the two plates.

It is either a spot weld or pressed in a die. There is a process called fineblanking, where they press partway thru the metal blank...allowing stacking together without movement. This same process can probably be used to assemble parts if it is carefully controlled. If you pressed it back together, will it stay put after zssembly..ie, a nut holds it tight to a shoulder.

Or you could rivet it back together.......

Take it out to the local small flying field and find a A&P mechanic.....he should be able to put a couple aluminium rivets in it

Thanks guys.

I'm not looking to replace it, as I have had it plated and the whole point in taking if off the cam in the first place was to plate it and avoid it rusting.

I'm thinking I'll rivet it or take my bike to an engineering shop and see if we can determine how the original was done.

I'll report back here with what I find.
