Unwanted Critters. What have you got?
« on: April 26, 2013, 06:20:55 AM »
Well, here in Vermont the unwanted critters have increased the frequency of their visits since my dog started to become crippled up and no longer chases them away at night. :(

Very large skunks, possums and things that go bump in the night have started showing up. I fear for my garden as the cats don't tangle with them.

Looks like we will have to get another livelier dog.

Woof!

The other unwanted critter across the street, a loud obnoixous late night party animal has moved in.  To rid myself of that I believe I'll just fire up the chainsaw early in the morning after I know he had a party until 2am.  8)

I had issues with racoons going through my trash but I took care of that however their legacy is there to remind me every time I take out the trash. Lesson learned here guys is if you have unwanted critters hanging around your place then make for damn sure your itchy trigger finger isn't aiming towards your house. As you can see in the pic my 22 long rifle shells had just a wee bit more zip than I had anticipated. ???

Ha! That reminds me of a racoon that would frequent a back porch at night and poach the outdoor cat's food. I decided to camp out on the roof and put the food bowl on top of the deck railing and wait with my trusty Ruger 10/22 carbine for our little food thief. Like clockwork Rocky arrived around midnight and decided to start snacking on the kitty kibble so I decided to sight up Rocky in my scope nice and easy. I either inentionally made a noise or accidentally made a noise that made Rocky face me on his hind legs and look up at me and that's when I squeezed the trigger so sweetly.

Crack! I watched as Rocky grabbed at his throat and saw the look on his face as he tumbled backwards and fell off the deck. I had to laugh a little at the sight, it was funny. Raccoons are tough little critters and a 22 in the throat won't stop most of them on sight so Rocky scampered off to go die somewhere. The food bowl stayed full for the cats after that, I can say that much.

My current problems with critters at this house are moles and chipmunks that are destrying my grass and yard. I'll have to get the traps out for the chipmunks but if there are moles anybody have any sure fire ways to rid yourselves of moles?

My wife had a garden and chickens so we are no strangers to critters of size and  species. We would place mothballs and cloth soaked with cheap cologne around the area along with aluminum pies pans tied to string. Also the little mettlalic whirly wind mills. It would help keep them at bay. Each thing had its purpose. The cologne and pie pans and whirly wheels helped with bobcats, coyotes, and rabbits. Mothballs helped with critters wanting to shack up in areas around the house. I always keep a .22 handy for rodents I'm scared to death of rats and mice. So needless to say if I see one in my line of fire it's dead I have a few .22 holes in my shop to prove it. The chicken coop is riddled with holes from years of shooting mice and field rats.
I've done a lot of things in my life that I'm not proud of...and the things I AM proud of, "are disgusting"

My dog is still young enough and big enough to tree racoons and use possums like a play toy. Stray cats forget about it, don't even think of using our yard for a litter box. I think she keeps burglers out of the backyard as well. We've had a rash of backdoor break-ins recently but they seem to by-pass our house. She's doing great for 11 but she's getting old fast.  :'(

They make traps for moles too.  Press down a part of a tunnel and put trap there.  It has "spears" the when triggered peirce the mole nicely.
Or you can open up spots in the tunnel and drop in juicy fruit gum.  they love it but can't digest it so it clogs them up and kills them

When I  was kid living on the west coast when had a Tom Cat named Shorty that kept the place free of of critters, Racoons, Rats, Snakes, Mice, Moles, Shrews, stray cats, dogs, not much on birds, the occasional person, he was a tough old bugger
my mother was the one that fed him so god help anything that tried to get between my mother and him. One day I came home from school and mother said there was a stray Shepard that tried come close and every time he tried Shorty would charge him, it wound up that between the two of them they put the run on the dog, some time later on a weekend I heard a dog frantically barking a couple of houses down from us and a woman yelling go away so I went to look and there was my tomcat up on the woman's porch after her terrier and she was trying to hit the cat with a broom so I called for him and got yelled at for having dangerous pet. No problems with yappy terriers after that, he was a great cat.

+1 On stink bugs.

My shop is open to critters and those stink bugs got into my power tools.  Means when you run a drill, they get squished and the smell blows in your face.  Yikes!

Try putting unused dryer sheets around. I heard about it and tried it around a door they like to hang around. So far so good.

Feral cats :-(
The way the yard is fenced, the dogs can't get to them. I scattered 3 boxes of mothballs and it doesn't smell like cat box, but now everybody is complaining it smells like mothballs!

Plain old ordinary fruit flies can smell pretty bad too. At work when I'm welding the flies are strongly attracted the the intense UV rays of the welder even in daylight hours. I'll be laying a bead and see one in the corner of my eye landing near my weld and watch it go poof. You wouldn't believe how bad they smell when they go up in smoke, horse flies are the worst.

We had a Chow and Collie mix that was mos.tly Chow, she was as gentle as the day is long with kids and a fierce territorial dog. The backyard was her domain and nothing came in the yard that was not welcomed. She treed a small coon and after taking her to the front yard the coon didn't leave for 2 days. She was creating a racket one night late and investigating I found she had cornered a possum along the wooden back fence and she was letting it have about 4 feet of fence line. Tried calling her off but she growled at me and then went in for the kill. Grabbed it behind the head and shook it once and dropped it dead. Then she decided it was mealtime, again she couldn't be persuaded to leave it, so it was hers.
Loved that dog and miss her.

We have two Airedales, the biggest problem with creature control with an Airedale terrier is to get rid of the dead cat before neighbor comes looking for it.
