New realm of chopperdom?? Sport bikes meet Choppers
« on: July 27, 2006, 08:37:54 AM »
Playing on the funny about

"If more is better why does your bike only have 2 cylinders?" - Might make a good shirt  :D

I was thinking that V-4's would make an AWSOME chopper motor. I mean an interceptor motor could do 0-75mph in first freaking gear! Just an idea. ::)

Use a Vmax as the starting point.

V max is a great engine but out of my price range right now. I could set ones with Interceptor motors.

You could start with an old Venture.  Same motor just detuned a bit.  Still puts out 90 hp and lots of torque and they can be found pretty cheap if the plastic is busted up.  Just stay away from the '83 to '85s as they had 2nd gear problems.

It would be a big project but pretty cool and unique.

That bike was built by Roland Sands & Jesse Rooke.
http://www.rolandsands.com/  &  http://www.rookecustoms.com/
Rooke builds wicked (& overpriced) cruisers, and Sands is the son of the owner of Perforance Machiene (american v-twin parts) company.

Both guys are under 30, and have WAY too much $$$...
I do like their bikes though...

Performance Machine also builds race bike parts, although there's more money to be had in the American V-Twin area. Roland Sands also raced 250 GPs in AMA before they axed the class. I think he may have won a championship too.

Roland might have won a race or two, but I don't think he ever had a championship.  Rich Oliver was around at the same time and was in a league of his own on the track.  Everybody knew they were racing for second place in 250s when he gridded up.  In his defense, I think Roland was banging most of the umbrella girls, so he still had a pretty productive racing career.

I'm not trying to tell the guy how to build a bike...but when you have over 200 horsepower you might want to think about using a front brake.  I'm crazy like that.

There were a couple years where Oliver was racing Superbike instead of dominating the 250s. I couldn't remember if it was Sands or Chuck Sorenson who won while Oliver was in Superbike, so I looked it up. Sands won the title in 1998.

But, when Oliver was in the championship, I agree, everyone else raced for 2nd.

I'll be damned...he sure did.  I forgot Oliver left 250's for a couple of years.  You da man Jeff.

I wonder why Oliver never did as well on bigger bikes?

I wonder why Oliver never did as well on bigger bikes?

There are so many reasons why, but we can only guess.

Maybe the competition was greater in SBK?

Maybe the factory Yamaha didn't get much support then? They were under Vance and Hines for years, but they brought it in house, I think as soon as Oliver came on board.

Maybe he was so used to the 250, and couldn't adapt to the 750?
