Is this the rectifier? ? 76 550

Hi can someone help me.
It looks like the wires are a bit cooked.
Can this be the reason my bike doesn't want to kick over??
Its just sounding as if it wants to start but not getting that last punch to start.

Looks aftermarket, and yes, if wires are 'cooked' you may also have damaged windings on generator
You need to find someone local who understands EMS system to check things out, trying to explain everything over the internet is pretty difficult.
Do you know how to use a multi-meter (do you own a meter?)

no.. don't have that.
Could I try and replace that and would it possibly work fine?

If you want to learn how to fix your bike, you shouldn't do that. Buy a multimeter with a diode test function and follow the service manual on inspecting the charging system. This way you'll find the parts that really need to replaced*.

* And yes, it might just be the rectifier fried by a battery hooked up with polarity reversed...

Go buy a multimeter, you need one and can get a decent one for $20. 

Then go here to diagnose and buy parts.....

The CB750 has an alternator not a generator.

The Clymers manual has simple instructions on how to check components.

Lucky, although they have basically the same charging system, the OP talks about a CB550, not a 750 ;)

550 and 750 have same system. ANYTHING that produces electricity is a generator
If I had meant a dynamo I would have said so (generators can be AC or DC)
 Even $5.00 meter from Harbor Freight works fine for testing (or even less when on sale)
Pretty sure you wont need a diode test on the rectifier  ;)

the alternator is a widely used "nickname" "slang" that became the word for an ac(alternating current)generator,,an alternator is a generator that generates alternating current,,not direct current like the older dc generator

But it will surely help following the instructions in the workshop manual :)

And, sorry, but $5 multimeters are crap that only have on place in my garage: The trash bin...

If it works, it works, that's all you need
 I'm not a tool snob, $200.00 + meter has longer service life and doesn't break when you drop it but provides the same function.
 It's only when you get to the $1000,s you get more accurate read out (which isn't needed for comparisons)
Even if you use the meter specified in service manual you'll still only get within +/- 10% (and good luck finding NOS 1970's multi-meter)
Get a $5.00 meter and buy a new one instead of changing battery  ;D
