CB750 1974 - Wiring and Cover Help Needed
« on: August 21, 2006, 07:00:03 PM »
Guys, I'm a little lost here. My bike is a '74 K4 model and I'm not sure where/how the alternator and starter cable gets routed. The cover I have on my bike has a notch in the chain cover (item 1 with the notch in the corner - 1st pic from a 1976 fiche). I assumed this would be an exit for the cables before they made their way up to the harness and starter terminal. But, after spending an hour or so looking through all of the pieces I took off 3 months ago, I did not find any rubber grommet or piece to fit that corner. In the factory manual I see where the cable and wiring come up through that hole without any rubber grommets used. I also have Mike Duckworth's CB750 history hardback and it shows a 1971 with this notch and no use of grommets. The microfiche for 1974 K4's (item # 1 in pic # 2) does not have this notch. What gives? Where and how does the wire and cable get up to the harness and what is correct for the 1974? I've purchased a cover on EBay (not here yet) for the 1974 that should be without the notch, but I'm confused as to how the wires get up if the notch is not there. Can someone shed light, or better post a pic?  :)

This is from a 9,000 mile bike that still had it's original chain, sprockets, and tires. I'm almost sure the cover would never have been removed. I'm reasonably sure of this since the lock tabs on the rear sprocket were factory installed as was the front sprocket lock tab. Kaw was notorious for mixing parts and years, especially on the H1's. I think Mr Honda may have done some of his own mixing of model year parts. ??

Help is really, really needed and appreciated.

Thanks guys,
Gordon

On my k5, the front sprocket cover IS notched where the starter cable and alternator wiring comes out of the engine. It (wiring) passes between the engine case and the notched front sprocket cover, without any grommet/rubber surrounding it,  but with extra sleeving around the harness and start cable, and routes upward to the associated electrics fronm there. I checked my parts cd, (K3-K6) and noticed that the sprocket cover in my picture is also without a notch. ???
The part number is listed as a "300" coded part, meaning that the cover was first used on the earlier series 750s as well. Not to say there is no such thing, but I've never seen a grommet at that particular location. Not having the cover off mine at this time, i cant remember exactly how the alternator wiring is kept out of the chain/speocket area, but i think there is some sort of bendable
straps guiding and holding the wires out of harms way. Hope this helps and doesn't confuse..
good luck

Actually this helps a lot. It lets me know the notch could be correct for my 1974 as I believed it to be.I've now found 4 different pictures in the factory shop manual and in the before mentioned book on the history of CB750's - all have the notch and none have any sort of grommet/rubber for the wiring to pass through.

Anyone else have some input? I'd like to have ideas on how other bikes are configured with regard to this cover.

Thanks,
Gordon

I have a K4 also - it has the notch and no grommet. The fiche is incorrect.

The Fiche is just a line drawing AND NOT an accurate representation of the shap so dont worry

I have a K4 (Mfg 10/73). It has a notched cover and no grommet. It seems that Honda used at least three different part numbers for these covers:

11351-300-020 (KO)

11351-300-050 (K1)

11351-300-060 (K2/3/4)

I don't know about the other "K" models as my Honda parts book stops at 1974.
