Help with my front fork seal replacement / fork dissasemble issues

Hello all,

So I've read all the posts and watched the videos but for some reason my 77 550K front forks won't come apart so I can change the seals.

Top caps are off, oil is drained, bottom allen screw is loosened (un-scewed like forever..) but will not come out, snap rings are removed.....fork sections will not separate as shown in the YouTube video of the kid that did it and makes it look so easy.....

HELP, Please!!!

The Allen should come out, if it is loose keep unscrewing while holding the upper tube. The tube will come out leaving the seal in the lower

You can use a broomstick to hold the inner tube while taking out the allen bolt.

Ok so I did what you said but the allen screw just spins....very loose....but will not budge out of where it seats.
The brake side shock allen screw is a bit stiffer but just spins like the other side.,...

No what....?

Push the tube down into the lower and it should push the Allen out! There is a copper washer and sometimes silicon holding it in

Nope...still won't come out......just spins and spins and there is no way to grab it (the 8mm bolt) with anything....

Anyone else..?

Did you try the broomstick? Remove the spring, put the broomstick into the tube and tap it forcibly into the tube. It will jam into the piece that the allen bolt screws into and allow you to unscrew the bolt.

Put fork cap back on, turn the fork upside down, push the fork on the floor so the spring is loaded.  Then loosen the bolt again

+1 with what goldarrow said, the internal pressure of the assembled and compressed fork is typically enough to keep things from spinning, thus allowing that hex head bolt to be fully unthreaded without just spinning in place.

Put the caps back on without removing the spring or guts, its worked for me everytime.

Hey Guys,

So I ended up using the broomstick method and tapered the end so it wedged into the part and hold it so I could remove the allen bolt.
