Can I run a BT45 "front" tire on the rear of my bike?
« on: April 30, 2013, 09:11:21 AM »
I want to buy a set of BT-45's for my CB400F. Went to Dennis Kirk and easily found the 90/90-18 front tire. But when I look for a rear tire the smallest they show is a 120/90-18. They do have a 110/90-18 FRONT tire. I know from reading a 110/90 will fit the wheel, but can I use this front tire on the rear? I know lots of people on here are running the BT-45's, but haven't read of this problem. Thanks.

I run the BT-45's on my CB450 and the front tires are very different from the rears. Some companies like Avon have the AM-26 that can be interchanged but i wouldnt do it with the BT-45's

Some you can run front or back, it should tell you on the website if that can be done. You just need to make sure the tire stays in the rotational direction it says to on the tire.

You 'can', but should you? No.

There are universal tires, I used a universal Avon Roadrider on my Enfield, which had a 19" rear tire.

Actually, some say that when you run a front on the rear you should reverse the directional arrow. This is because the run direction is determined by where the force on the ply overlay is coming from, trying to undo the overlay of the plies. On a front tire the force is in deceleration. On a rear the dominant force comes from the engine driving the tire. So you turn it around.  Otherwise the drive force will try to undo the plies of the tire.

I say... I don't know.

Many tires are made so the stress put to the rear tire is from accelerating and the stress from the front from braking. So a front tire on the rear would work as far as stress if you ran it backwards, but then the tread pattern would be reversed and not work in the wet.
